Top 5 Windows 7 features Apple should copy | |

As long as we can remember, Apple has always been viewed as being much more creative and innovative than Microsoft. If there was a new feature in Windows, you could bet that the comparison with Apple would follow almost immediately – and allegations that Microsoft simply copied what Apple had already. There is an ongoing argument, even if many Mac OS X "innovations" are borrowed from the open-source community. Expose windows manager? Borrowed from a long list of Linux UI add-ons. Spaces? Linux has had virtual desktops for years. Windows 7 came out of almost nowhere with some new features we believe Apple not only should take serious, but integrate in OS X as well. | ||

1. Multi-Touch
Yeah, Apple should definitely do something with multi-touch... maybe they could even start with a smaller device that also runs OS X just to trial it out... perhaps a phone of some kind. After all the amazing innovations that Microsoft have put into their mobile platform are simply mind blowing! 2. Windows 7 taskbar Ooooh, they converted the taskbar to be a combination of the OS X Dock and the current functionality of the taskbar - brilliant! Who would thought to do that? 3. Libraries Symbolic links... now you know that we're getting innovative! Seriously was it really that difficult to come up with 5 features from Windows 7 that symbolic links made it to number 3? 4. Play To and Windows Media Center "Windows has become better multimedia center than OS X, period." Phew! No use arguing then! 5. Device Stage A new device manager screen... that's it! Apple is doomed if they don't copy this innovative feature! Seriously... I know everyone wants to get on board the Windows 7 bandwagon, to preach it's inevitable brilliance and innovation, but is it really necessary to come up with something as lame as this? Let them work on it, market it and judge it along the way but let's not get our panties wet over symbolic links. |

multi-touch in Win7 is pervassive - you know, like instant search is in Vista... yet... we obsess over the few areas where Vista's UI is "inconsistent" as we give Apple and OS X one pass after another - no matter how awful spotlight actually is. we'll ignore virtual and search folders in Vista and Win7 and pretend that Apple didn't add object tagging as an after thought years after Microsoft did it so much better in Vista, or how MS will extend and use it in seven
we can go into how window focus in Windows 7 and finding exactly which window one wishes to work in is so much better than it is in any OS - any previous version of Windows and lightyears ahead of OS X, but we won't... we'll limit the discussion to how MS copies Apple and be shouted down and branded as shills. it is a waste of time... |
