Hyper-V's low cost helps Microsoft weaken VMware's grip on server virtualization | |

Bolstered by the June launch of its Hyper-V virtualization software, Microsoft Corp. grabbed nearly a quarter of the fast-growing x86 server virtualization market in the second quarter, market research firm IDC said on Thursday. The success cut VMware Inc.'s global share to less than twice its own. Counting by license shipments, the company had 44% of the Q2 market with its VMware ESX and VMware Server products, IDC said. But, IDC analyst Brett Waldman said in an e-mail, "VMware's virtualized license share is likely to decrease in the long run [as Hyper-V continues to] grow and take share from both [Microsoft's] Virtual Server 2005 and VMware." | ||

| I thought VMWare's equivalent tools were also now free? MS will compete via their classic method: bundling. Why go out and go through all the hassle of downloading & installing VMWare when Hyper-V is already preinstalled? Sure, it isn't as good, but it's right there in front of your face. |

Performance-wise, it is just as good as ESX - within 4%
"Although ESX Server 3.5 edged out Hyper-V by 4 percent in the performance tests I ran, Hyper-V made a competitive showing in spite of the fact that it was prerelease code." "My testing revealed that both Hyper-V and ESX Server 3.5 deliver excellent levels of performance. VMware's VI3 for an eight processor server with 3 years of support retails at over $40k. Then you have to pay for the OS that is running in each workload under VI3.
A Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Datacenter license with unlimited Windows Server 2008 licenses run as workloads under Hyper-V retails for about $3k per processor or about $24k for an eight processor server. The edge VMware has over Microsoft's Hyper-V is VMware's VMotion, but is that worth it? Enterprise IT shops seem to be saying no. When you add the cost of VI3, the cost of each OS running as a workload plus applications, utilities, etc. The VMware cost is several times that of Microsoft's. Investor have come to realize this as well. VMware's stock price has shrunk from a high of over $125 to below $20 in the last year. |
