The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows. | ||

This is interesting; I mean they are really pushing ahead full steam.
Besides, but this is just speculation: Windows 7, Windows Mobile 7... I would not surprised if they launched both of them in October 2009. This post was edited by Fritzly on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 23:04. |

Fritzly, I think it is fair to say that they have always pushed full steam ahead. The only exception was induced by the re-set in 2004, following the decision to build and ship XP SP2 as just that, a service pack - made more than necessary by the rapid evolution of the web and its impact on Windows security and the nearly countless flaws exploited in XP prior to Aug 2004.
The conversations we would be having had Allchin not succeeded in pushing for the release of XP SP2 as a service pack would likely be centered on having had to pay for a new OS that fixed what should not have been broken in the first place - as all ignored the evolution of the web and associated threats and their impact on the platform. We'd be just as unreasonable in that context. As we all well know, XP SP2 was not nearly far enough, and the advances in and focus on security in Vista have either been ignored, or reported as being annoying. We're humans and it is either too cold, or too hot and Windows 7 is already late - as it will be what Vista should have been, or it's too early - confirming for all what a failure Vista "is".... and we wonder why people like pets so much... clue: they're not human. |

I am just speculating here but based on what I heard, both from public and "private" sources I would not call 7 Vista R2; I am sure people will have different opinions about it but again IMO it will not be Vista R2.
Will it be a revolutionary OS? Unfortunately not but... I would be very happy if MS would ship whatever OS "Tony Stark" was using in the Ironman movie; I am pretty sure it was something coming from MS, especially if you noted as he is moving objects from the desktop to a "Surface" kind of device. As for my comment about "pushing full steam" it was based not so much on the development time but on the fact that they already announced the official name of the OS; this is unusual for MS. Noe let us see how long will it take to see a Windows 7 "Ready" Tablet; my Toshiba 400 is getting older but I am waiting to get one that enables the "Multitouch" capability. @3, yeah, I really think (once again) Bill Gates was right about the direction and wrong about the time-line regarding natural user interfaces. To his credit, I think he knows that so very well - that what the future "will hold" won't be well executed upon, even by his company, for a few generations.
Now, with much more powerful processors, co-processing low power GPU's, an architecture that renders off the page and better batteries, tablet PC's with touch technologies and the already great speech capabilities in Vista (that no one speaks about much), will change things a great deal and finally break the ATX/Clam Shell designs boring the crap out of some of us. I can see very smart tablets that dock into many different stations - ultimately becoming so small that they end up looking like present day phones - with advanced projection capabilities, etc... Win 7 and new tablet designs is a nice step in that direction. |

Bill Gates will be missed; if it was not for him we might not have Tablet PCs at all.
That is my issue with MS nowadays; too many executives in power; you need visionaries to push companies and make them lead the market. Today everything is run looking at quarterly results only; as you know, much better than me btw, tatctic wins the battle but it is strategy that wins the war. |
