After a strong showing in the U.S. video game sales charts for early March, the fortunes of Microsoft's Xbox changed dramatically and the console ended up barely registering in the top 20 for the full month, according to data released on Wednesday. After registering six top-20 titles in the NPDFunworld report for March 3-16, the Xbox ended up with only two top-20 games for the full month, at Nos. 19 and 20. The performance is also down from February, when Xbox had three top-20 titles, including two in the top 10. Those two top-10 titles completely disappeared from the March results. Microsoft recently lowered its worldwide fiscal-year shipment forecast for the console by up to 40 percent after disappointing sales internationally.

It's odd, but at this time last year you still couldn't buy a Playstation 2 because of supply shortages.
The whole secret here is getting fantastic games out. It took Sony a year to do that, and I expect the same pattern with XBox.

AlmostFamous, I agree, and I think the point can be taken further--the specs they chose and the cost it sells at... isn't that a part of the issue... The hardware config and price, no matter how sexy to some, is not the product that most want. Even when you hear things like a slimmed-down PC--so what I can't load a PC OS (PS2 can) and most of the games are PC ports anyway.
No, saying, it's the most powerful console, or the price matches the value is simply the wrong argument... Give me the right hardware and the right price.
As for soda's, PS2 comparison... I think that's the wrong way to argue too... Did the PS2 take a while to pick up speed? Yes, but that's because the next gen market wasn't ready yet, Sony had their own production issues, and even when consumers were ready they weren't able to compare the PS2 to the competition which they knew was coming but couldn't actually test. The fact of the matter is PS2 now has a huge base, a huge base of games (including good exclusive titles), and that consumers, now that they can see and use all 3, are hands down chosing PS2.
I don't know how games which were thought to be good, but we now understand are going to experience a quick drop off, and are not going to be franchise titles is mitigated by whatever Sony may have been going through a year ago.

I'm curious about that as well, #14.
I know many people who own PS2 or XBox, and in many cases own both. As I said, at this time last year the people with PS2's were bitching about the lack of good games.

Funny, but at my office... there are 2 PS2 owners, 1 GameCube owner, and 4 Xbox owners. Now, I realize this is a small sample from which to draw a conclusion... but I would suggest that market acceptance is simply understated at this point. I would contend that the Xbox is being accepted just fine.
Oh, and of course I am one of the four lucky Xbox owners. The system is awesome. I play every day.

soda and whoever you are, no, I don't own any of the consoles, but yes, I have played all of them. I have good friends who have both the PS2 and Box--GC play has only been thru demo kiosks. Am I a hardcore gamer? No. Do I play enough games, actually try these things out, and listen to my firends who are more involved in the market? Yes.
Again, soda comparing PS2 a year ago to XBox now is a losing proposition. A year ago with a dearth of PS2 games, the next best option was PSOne games, and there was no next-gen competition. So there was no alternative...
The same problem now for MS is MAGNIFIED by the fact that 90% of XBox games are available for 2 OTHER platforms, and that of exclusive titles, both the other consoles have solid and existing fan bases of morely highly desired titles.

sodajerk - Heh. I always love how when facts are inconvenient to you, you claim they are irrelevant.
You have to keep in mind that the XBox is actually a 4th generation gaming machine. That is, it's hardware capabilities are considerably more than what the PS2 offers.

Boy, soda, that's quite a jump--XBox has no competition because its a generation ahead of everything else? Baloney! If it is 4th gen, it's a crappy 4th gen because performance is not at all that much better than PS2.
If you don't see the reality that the PS2's situation a year ago is unique and quite different than XBox in the present, then you are quite deluded by teh MS lovefest hoping that it won't stop and won't drop.... But unfortunately, without a few killer games or a major revolution in what the console is, it is just going to get worse.

sodajerk: The X-Box performs a hell of a lot better than the PS2, especially considering how better the graphics are.

#31 - I think his point was that the Xbox vs. PS2 is analogous to what the PS2 vs. PS1 was.
