Windows Vista Adoption Keeps Growing | |

Chris Flores: There's been a steady amount of buzz around the ‘net recently about Windows Vista adoption, sparked by a blog post last week questioning Windows Vista adoption rates and most recently by some great number crunching by Computerworld. In light of the various claims, I thought I would offer up some perspective on Windows Vista deployment numbers ... and what experienced industry watchers, like Forrester and CDW, are saying about Windows Vista.
First, you've heard us say before that we've sold more than 180 million Windows Vista licenses (40 million of those in the last quarter alone) and that major enterprises like Continental Airlines, the United States Air Force, Virgin Megastores, Charter, Avanade, Eastman Chemical and PPG are deploying seats by the thousands (and in some cases by the tens of thousands). What I find amusing is that the other day some site claimed Vista was a disaster because only 35% of its users had Vista on the PC.
Latch was ecstatic until I pointed out that 35% was an amazing adoption rate (especially when the other 65% were using XP - nobody uses Linux). |

After 12 months, XP was supposedly on 40% of Windows systems worldwide. Vista is currently below 10%, regardless of how many silly "licenses" MS shipped. |

Well at least he posts a link to back up his data - why don't you post one to back up what you are saying about Vista being on less then 10 percent of PCs world wide which sounds like BS to me. I have never seen that number quoted anywhere even with the most conservative statistics. Net applications says almost 17 percent are Vista. http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=10 |

" I contacted Gartner and they were kind enough to mail me their latest numbers. This data does not exactly match with that of the ChannelWeb article, but it allows us to draw the same conclusion: the adoption rate of Windows Vista is indeed comparable to that of Windows XP after its release. Here are the numbers I received from Gartner: PC Installed Base by Operating System, Worldwide Operating System 2003 2008 Windows XP Home and Follow-Ons 12% 23% Windows XP Professional 10% 40% Windows Vista Home 0% 16% Windows Vista Business 0% 13% Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001. The market share of Windows XP Professional was 10% after approximately two years. Windows Vista was available to business customers on November 8, 2006 and was available to the public on January 30, 2007. If Gartner’s prediction is correct, then Windows Vista Business will be installed on 13% of all PCs worldwide at the end of 2008. This means that the adoption rate of Vista will be a little faster than that for XP following its release. I have never seen a source claim that Vista is on less then 10 percent of desktops so I am going to call BS until you can post a link. Strangely, you blast parker for believing any number that supports his pro-Vista/MS stance but in turn you believe any number that supports your anti-vista/MS stance. You know there will always be people willing to post something that favours an anti-MS stance just the same as there are people willing to inflate the numbers so perhaps you should take your own advice and not believe everything you read. |

#15: I don't lie as it's too easy to catch people these days, plus it's not exactly ethical. What kind of position do you advocate if you have to lie about it? I definitely read it, but may have had it wrong. I'll see if I can dig it up, but trying to search for stuff using keywords like 'Vista XP after 12 months percent" gives back a load of noise.

Less than 10 percent of Microsoft's installed base has upgraded to Windows XP since its release last October.
