OK, it's not perfect. But Windows Vista on a new PC is perfectly serviceable for many users. In some ways, in fact, Vista is a better operating system than Windows XP. Unfortunately, XP's heir apparent is also the most derided and discounted Microsoft operating system since Windows Me.

I was considering (not reconsidering) getting Vista ONLY to get DirectX 10 to play the next S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with all eye candy turned on (yes, I'm a fan of this game) but when I saw the price I didn't make the move. I already paid a good price to updage my videocard so I was able to play the 1st with Dynamic Lightning instead of static.
I'm not a big player but I really wanted to play that title at max settings. I think I will have to wait a bit longer, I'm not ready to spend that much money of that huge piece of software that an OS is and I'm not ready to backup current setup and do all the work to install it either. |

I bought a copy for my 2 year old Sony Vaio laptop. It ran like a dog, to the point I couldn't be productive on it so I had to reinstall XP (which flies). Not everyone can afford to buy a new PC just to run Vista...

| HeartMan, how much memory was in the Vaio? I have Vista ultimate running on an older machine, but with 2.0GHz P-IV and 2GB of memory it is more than useable. |

I don't get it, but I reformatted my racing machine and went from XP SP3 to Vista.
Either the drivers in Vista have become a LOT better, or I had a bad case of Windows Rot in XP because I picked up 30fps in iRacing. TL |

#5, TL, Yes, drivers are significantly better - but also better across a much, much wider range of components and sub-systems. For example, chipset drivers in particular, are much improved for large number of sets. Early on, one had to pick those for which solid drivers existed.
One could always produce great results - it is just that now is is far easier and across a much wider range of gear. Certainly nothing new for any new release of Windows across an ecosystem that is about 20 times larger than it was in 2001. (that's a real device number, by the way...). You're an old hand at this... maybe we all expected things to be different this time. |

| #5: +30 fps as compared to XP or your previous Vista attempt? I'd buy that the Vista drivers were crap and got better, but there's no way you're squeezing an additional 30 fps out of Vista over XP. |

It has 1 GB memory. Plenty to make XP run smoothly and Vista crawl. I do run Vista on my desktop and it is fine, but that's a AMD X2 6400 with 4 GB of RAM. I just think MS did a horrible job of underestimating the hardware requirements in the real world. They were faced with a new, resource intensive OS and they didn't want to scare people away (go figure). Microsoft has just lost focus on what it should be doing well, that's all. The proof is in all the features that had to be dropped from Vista in spite of several years of development. We'll see the same thing in Win7. HeartMan |
