David Williams over at iTWire has done a comparison of Windows vs Linux. It is performed by doing functionally identical tasks in both the OSes. This comparison is not a fair one by any measure. The laptops running the Windows and Linux were different in the hardware config and the software used for the tests were comparable but clearly different (MS Office vs OpenOffice; IE vs Firefox 3). | ||

| This is just about the stupidest comparison I've seen in awhile. Let's look at performance between two completely different OSes running on different hardware. This isn't apples & oranges, it's apples & ashtrays. |

Not only was the comparison invalid to begin with (different hardware/software), but the analysis of the comparison was inane.
This guy has *no* idea what he is talking about. He says Linux's use of ram was "tighter" because it relinquished more memory when a browser window was closed. Wtf? Has this guy ever heard of proactive caching strategies? Chances are, if you launch a browser once, you'll launch it again. In fact, Vista has a very advanced proactive caching mechanism that even uses the time of day to predict what you'll be loading. If another application needs that memory, Vista gives it up. It's as simple as that. Trying to measure memory usage by looking at what task manager says is currently used is a clueless and moronic testing method. My desktop runs Windows Vista Business 64bit. It has 5GB of ram, and it's currently using a bit over 4GB. In fact, right after startup, it's using close to 1.5GB. After just some light use, it uses over 3GB. Does that mean that Vista is horrible with memory usage? No. Not at all. Vista sees that I have tons of available memory and starts proactively caching things so that my machine will be as responsive as possible. If an application needs a lot of memory, that memory is released to the application. My Vista laptop only has 2GB of memory, yet it rarely uses more than 1.5GB running the same set of applications. How could this be? Vista sees there is less memory available for it to play with, so it does less caching. Sigh... |

#2 RMD, you make a great point, and I think presented SuperFetch in about as good a way as one has ever done.
You should write a blog post to it so we can publish it here - and explain Vista memory usage in the proper context. Vista machines actually get faster, a lot faster, as one uses them - they even know when people go to lunch and what they are likely to do when they return. Great post! |
