On July 21, Microsoft announced that the final version of the Power Pack 1 update for Windows Home Server is available for immediate download.
Power Pack 1 is basically a feature pack. It adds 64-bit Vista support, shared-folder backup, remote-access improvements and power-consumption functionality to Windows Home Server. Power Pack 1 also includes a fix to the data-corruption bug that had plagued a number of Home Server customers.

And in only 7 months, too.

#1, You do realize just how hard it was to replicate this bug right....???
You also realize how unique this storage solution is and how it re-writes the rules as regards providing for ultra-easy to scale/implement "RAID-LESS" storage??
First, one has to have multiple drives.
Second, one has to have folder mirroring turned on for affected files.
Third one would have to edit the files on the WHS server, vice bringing the file down.
Fourth, only select file types were affected and not all the time...
Finally, the solution had to be dev'd for both 32 and 64 bit clients after being reproduced in the first place.
I know.. I know... "I'm apologizing for MS again...." Not at all... I just think it helps for people to understand what the deal was and why... you know... a snark-free answer...

#2: Regardless of how hard it was to replicate the bug, MS managed to do it in January. Once the bug is replicated, it should be a simple matter of tracing the problem back. While I'm very often critical of their business moves, I don't for an instant think they hire stupid people. If the bug took 3 weeks to reproduce and 6 months to fix, then there must have been a large technical challenge or a strategic reason for the long delay. Either way, it doesn't look good on them.

I'm pretty sure that the delay was caused by one person who stood up and said:
"Ok, we know what it is. Now, how do we fix it without there being any chance whatsoever of screwing up everyone's data".

#4: Microsoft recommends that you buy 2 WHS systems so that you can backup your backup.

The WHS team explained exactly why it took so long... the KB articles explained how files were affected/appended. The solution had to not only fix future issues, but repair any issues, which may have been introduced earlier - and as TL pointed out, w/o baking anyone's data in the process.
#5, the bloody same applies to any disc based backup solution. PP1 also provides for a way to backup the WHS server itself - and yes, to an external drive or multiple DVD's. How is that any different from any other disc BU solution - where cheapo units use RAID 1 and HFS?
The whole idea behind WHS was to NOT use RAID at all - and make adding protected storage easy and fast for non-technical users. (among many other useful things that no other BU solution offers).

The problem that affected WHS was not a simple one; what I think is misleading is call it a "patch". It was more a re-writing of several parts the OS itself which, obviously takes time to verify that doing it does not create regressions in other areas etc..
