Antitrust penalties proposed by nine states would keep Microsoft from releasing timely security updates to its Windows operating system or open the company up to trademark violations, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said Tuesday. Gates was referring to a proposal that would require Microsoft to continue selling the previous version of Windows after it releases a new version. Gates said Microsoft wouldn't be allowed to recall or replace a version if a major security hole is found. | ||

| If the Office file formats have to be given to a standards committee, why not make Real hand over their streaming format? I think consumers would find benefit in not having to use Real Player to play Real media. Ditto for Quicktime. |

Everyone complains that Microsoft doesn't get their stuff out fast enough to begin with. Most of it is related to the extensive regression testing they do.
Now imagine if they have to do it with all the thousands of versions of Windows and IE that would be floating around. |

| The solution is for other companies to stop trying to follow MS' every move or complaining about their entry into a market, and actually spend some money on R&D, programmers, designers, and marketing, instead of on their legal departments. This is how you get competition. |

So you are saying that out of the billions of dollars companies like Sun, Oracle, AOL, etc. take in, they can't put forth any of that for the things I mentioned in my previous post?
The CEOs are billionaires. Why can't they take a paycut and invest that into R&D. Some of these companies are so pathetic, they expect Microsoft to do their marketing for them. If you don't put effort into marketing (I mean TV and print ads, not web ads), how are people even to know you have a product to offer?
