Anyone hoping that Google Apps can rival Microsoft’s products in the enterprise marketplace will have pause for thought after reading the astonishing testimony of development manager Sergey Solyanik, who has just gone Back to Microsoft after a stint working at Google. His blog post starts out innocuously enough with a list of good things at Google that Microsoft ought to emulate as an employer. But when it comes to “So why did I leave?” Solyanik rips into Google’s working practices, in particular criticizing the effects of its business model, which emphasizes free software at the expense of utility. | ||

| Ya'll remember when Sergey Solyanik left MS to go to Google? He's been on an interesting journey and its nice to see him go back to MS. I don't know why so many think Google, or any newer company can just fog out enterprise level products in a short time and expect them to reflect the same level of maturity present in Microsoft software. Google will get there, but it will take more time and like it or not, they'll have to adopt many practices they do not like, or find very cool at all - some of it is just work and anyone who has been part of building a business grade product understands that more than half of the effort has about as much sex appeal as a bowl of cold oatmeal. |

| Yeah, but it seems the one leading back to MS was left in tact, or MS respected his initial reasons for going Goog to begin with. I think that is pretty cool... but of course some people won;t see it that way and state that MS is just so desperate to learn of what Goog was doing that they let him return. My bet is that they won't even ask him and they'll remain pro's as will he. |

You see 101 posts and articles about twitter going down, etc... but I can't personally remember noticing any such attention to google apps. Are they rubbish? Has anyone done a review from an enterprise perspective, that goes deeper than critique of the logo? This post was edited by mooresa56 on Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 22:26. |

#5 - Having skimmed through Sergey's posting, it looks like what he's trying to say is... to the outside world Google's apps look fine... but the behind-the-scenes stuff is "in need" of serious bug hunting - obviously I'm guessing and I may be completely misintrepreting what he wrote :-)
Here's another old classic "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"... I moved from one IT business to being the IT Manager at another (MUCH LARGER) business - there are exactly the same business issues, its just different scenery. |
