Boy didn't they...
Paul Thurrott addressed the same issue well, http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2008/06/29/randall-stross-jumps-the-shark.aspx It is time tech pundits and actual tech journalists wrote about Windows Vista more objectively and according to something closer to the truth. It isn't too much to ask for related articles to be based upon facts and actual first-person experience. That said, I want to be very clear about a couple of things: engineers building great systems and end user experiences based on Windows Vista do exist and they are successfully deploying those great experiences. They have been doing it since Vista shipped to business customers in 2006. I am also certain that dreadful experiences have been delivered to end users based upon Windows Vista - dreadful at least as compared to the Windows Vista systems small builders are delivering, which are devoid of third-aprty cruft and built with solid components certified to run Vista well. The key to a great Windows Vista computer is of course just that - delivering sans the ad-ware cruft and using certified components and associated drivers (well duh, right? - nothing new there... and that was Paul's point in part of his blog post, and countless other writings). Where this comes off the rails is when, as I have often shared in great detail, we state what we are doing to deliver great Vista systems (certainly a repeatable process) and we're accused of being MS shills, and worse... and so are others... and worse. (apparent offenses ignoring that perhaps maybe, just maybe, we're competent engineers selling tested and proven systems according to a tested and proven design model...? Nah.... can't be... we're all just shills). Paul and others are right, it is time more sober people began to defend not just Microsoft and Vista, but the truth... and that matters a whole lot more than just an OS product. |

#1: You're not accused of being a shill because you build the awesomest Vista systems, it's your constant, never-ending fluffing of Microsoft while dismissing or diminishing any of MS' missteps. For example, you're about the only person on the planet that I know of who didn't see MS's gaming of ISO for what it was.
I could take your last paragraph and spin it 180 on you with regard to journalists instead of system engineers. Just because someone writes up a poor Vista review, you claim they're part of the world-wide anti-Vista media conspiracy. Maybe, just maybe, they're writing from their heart with their experiences... Nah, can't be, they're all just anti-Vista agents... Speaking of Vista, can anyone tell me why upgrading from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate takes an entire day? Can anyone tell me why it sits at "Checking Compatibility" for 45 minutes? Can anyone tell me why the upgrade insists I manually install SP1 first, instead of either doing it for me or just upgrading the damn system to Ultimate w/SP1? Can anyone tell me why it takes literally hours to apply the upgrade? |

Where lay persons, so identified, could and should share experiences - bad and or good... but that is a very different thing. |

#4: They don't necessarily have to be a tech expert. It depends on their focus. Writing purely as a user is just as important as writing as an expert.

#7, Ok Latch, fair enough... but Randall Stross, a professor of business at San Jose State University, is writing authoritatively about operating system architecture and drawing conclusions, and presenting comparisons and recommendations about something he clearly is not qualified to write about in the context presented.
"If" he had written in the context of an exploration about what he had discovered, and shared resources used throughout that process and then shared what he understood the material to conclude, now that would be different, but he doesn't... instead he goes on about Windows and what it is, isn't and should be. Sad that he didn't do it as an exploration, because his many books are great that way... |
