Chicago (IL) – Firefox 3 downloads have topped 18 million earlier today and it appears that Mozilla has picked up market share from Microsoft, but it is hardly the windfall many would have expected. According to Net Applications, Firefox is up about 0.8 points and has the 20% mark in reach.

Hmmm.
1 billion PCs in use.
18,000,000 / 1,000,000,000

I have not changed because a umber of my add-ins are not updated for 3 yet.
One thing is certain, there are NO conditions that would have me switch from Firefox to IE currently. As things stand, there's not a single factor that I prefer IE in. I'm a strong MS supporter but, this issue is closed for the foreseeable future.

#2: From what I've heard, a lot of the plugins work fine under 3 but their version field blocks them from activating. If there is no sign of an update for your critical plugins, you can install a free editor that will allow you to modify your plugin to allow for version 3. Install & test.

#2 Activities are great in IE8. Saves me tons of time. I can add my own providers.

Curious... when they test FF3 they test virgin releases devoid of plugins - in terms of raw performance and memory usage, etc...
How does FF2/3 perform when loaded up with third-party plugins and what is the memory usage/leakage then?
Similarly, are the most popular plugins being tested or evaluated in terms of security?
I ask this since I have not tested it in this context and I don't think others are either - at least not those writing reviews that I have seen. Does anyone have any reviews of FF3 with popular plugins running?
While I have run FF3, I have to say, it did not feel "smooth" [Test system is an Intel Core 2 Quad OC'd at 4.26 GHz, 4 GB RAM, P5E3 MB, Win/Vista x64 Ult.]. While it ran well enough, it just felt blocky to me. A matter of personal taste for sure.
#4, Activities are great and so is the download security and safety scanner - all DL's are scanned in the cloud before they touch a user interface, which I think stands as an excellent example of Software and Services.

I, like many others I interact with, have downloaded FF3, installed it and after a day or so of use, uninstalled it. So the "we've had 18 million downloads" to me, does NOT mean there are 18 million people consistently USING it.
Poor UI considerations, no dramatic speed improvements over IE (for loading/multiple tabs open/page loading based upon my own timed tests) and it uses about the same amount of RAM... plus I cannot manage FF3 on-going configuration from AD.

There are things FF can do which IE can't do (especially with some extensions) but the opposite is rarely true :)

#5 "How does FF2/3 perform when loaded up with third-party plugins and what is the memory usage/leakage then? "
For example, Google suggests that you disable Firebug when using Gmail. Enough said.
I also had problems with some other plugins such as Submit To Tab. I had to remove it completely to prevent frequent crashes.
It is pretty much like with Windows - you can install poorly written application/driver and bring the whole system to its knees. Same story with Firefox and its extensions.
It is just that asshats always blame Microsoft and never blame Mozilla :)

Thanks, Gonzo
Agreed. I don't think much of a look is paid to non-MSFT software - not relative to the effort applied to MS.

#11 - its typical Microsoft (and/or Vista) bashing "just for the sake of it" and "jumping on the bandwagon"...
btw - did anyone notice these issues with IE7 SINCE FF3 installed (on XP SP3)
1 - various website's text field entries (such as this field) "completely fail to work" in IE7
2 - various parts of Facebook fail to display or even just work correctly
(also)
3 - various Flash9-based sites fail to work in FF3 (i.e. www.foxtel.com.au)
4 - two tabs loaded in FF3 = 180MB (!!!) compared with the same two tabs in IE7 = only 70MB
5 - FF3 font style/size detection is "poor" (I did write broken but yeah it kinda works) basically FF3 displays the wrong font and/or the wrong size
also... FF3 takes forever to post to AW!! :(
