Microsoft Windows 7: What the Future Holds | |

Microsoft hasn't said much officially about Windows 7, but during a recent speech, Bill Gates said that it would "be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone." No one knows exactly what you'll see on the Windows 7 desktop, but here are a few intriguing hints. | ||

Um, yeah... Apple has had backup built into OS X for so much longer than Windows. <rolls eyes> This rewriting of history to make Apple the inventor of it all is just ridiculous. |

Based on... what? So just because it's some of the same people that worked on the Office 2007 team (Julie Larson-Green and ???), now it's somehow likely they'll simply take the approach developed to solve the issues of toolbar bloat and buried features in Office and slap it onto Windows? I don't think that follows. |

I'm sure this article would contain just as much negative inference if it were speculation about a future Apple product, of course....
"...Microsoft recently announced plans to integrate multi-touch technology in Windows 7, making user input possible by touching and gesturing your fingertip around the screen—a way of one-upping the iPhone interface while covering your monitor with greasy fingerprints." "...includes the ability to access your files from anywhere (as in Apple's Back to My Mac feature), and secure roaming, apparently a scheme to let you access your bookmarks and passwords from anywhere—a convenience that also sounds like a potential security nightmare." "One issue he didn't mention, however, was the chilling security nightmare that might result from integration with your wide-open cell phone." etc. etc. |

I found this pretty funny:
"To see why it's called Windows 7, open a command prompt in your current version and enter the command VER. Under XP SP3, the version number displayed is 5.1.2600. Under Vista SP1, it's 6.0.6007 [[note: it's really 6001]]. No prize for guessing the first digit when you run VER in Windows 7's command prompt." The answer? 6. The leaked builds of Windows "7" so far have been version 6.1. And other than the codename "7", there is absolutely no evidence that they are going to up it to 7.0 before shipping. In fact, the Sinofsky interview, and everything I've read so far, indicates to me that Windows "7" is going to be a relatively minor release. Just like 95 to 98 was 4.0 to 4.1, 2000 to XP was 5.0 to 5.1, Vista to "7" is likely going to be 6.0 to 6.1. The name "7" implies to me that they used to have grander plans, but have scaled it down. Too bad they didn't stick with the Vienna code-name; would've served them much better. |

#7 -- From 2000 to XP, despite the very noticable UI changes, there were very few new under-the-hood changes or new APIs compared with 2000. It was definitely a minor change overall.
ME -- well yes, anyone going from anywhere on the 9x line to anywhere on the NT line would be experiencing a major upgrade. But that doesn't count here. |
