Will Microsoft Deliver The 'Wow' In Windows 7? | |

Tuesday evening at The Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif., Microsoft announced that the next version of Windows, code named Windows 7, will include support for a multi-touch user interface technology similar to that which powers Apple's iPhone.

Wait a minute. Wasn't Windows Vista supposed to be the Wow?
Before that it was XP. Before that it was Win2000. Before that it was WinME. Nah, we'll give MS a mulligan on that one. But before that it was Win98. I guess Windows 7 is the really, really, really, really (really) Wow version! |

Its just typical marketing speak... we see it EVERYWHERE in the world.
The 2008 model of the car is better than the 2007 version of that car... And we've all heard the classic "new and improved" glass cleaner... Nothing new here... move along :-) |

| Calm down, folks... touch is just one feature. I'm not sure I see a lot of end-user scenarios for it at the deskside level, but I can see it on laptops and in conference rooms. We have a bunch of ThinkPad X61s with the touchscreen feature, and people really like using it. |

| MS needs to run a substantial series of ads for Vista that refute the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads. These ads have been taken as fact by many people. It's a bit disturbing when customers believe Apple's ads and MS has not even tried to refute them in mainstream publications and on television. In fact, MS's remaining quiet has given unfounded credibility to the amusing but erroneous Apple ads. Why not run TV ads shoeing gamers playing high end games on Vista (with updated drivers of course). MS: do ANYTHING but be passive in the mainstream media. |

#4: if you watch the Ballmer and Gates video from D6, they clearly--at least publicly--are not concerned much about Apple. I agree, though--their TV silence is ridiculous... I really don't understand how they could blow so much dough on "Vista marketing" and still have a virtual absence of TV spots (that Vanishing Point contest couldn't have cost that much, could it???). I think Robert McLaws touched on a great idea--have people put together their own "Why I use Vista" videos as many did for that HP contest. Take those and put them on TV, more or less un-retouched. No need to mention Apple, just let people tell their own story. That would speak volumes, and cost hardly anything.
Microsoft, are you listening??? No need to blow millions on a new ad agency (Crispin)... user testimonials (and the obvious passion behind them) will tell about Vista in a much more convincing way than anything perceived as coming from Microsoft's own "mouth." |

Well I remember people standing in line hours in advance and stores opening at midnight for the launch of Windows 95 exactly as people did for the launch of the iPhone.
What does it mean? It means that the launch of something, whatever the object is, must be planned well in advance with a continuous drop of news in order to achieve two key objectives: keep the public focused and build up excitement. Vista had some "WOW" moment when MS previewed Dreamscene but after that they failed to release the "Fall" theme and now Stardock is basically managing the entire show which is available for everybody. So yes MS has issues with PRs and not only; watching Mr. Sinofsky states one day "I am not going in the details of Windows 7" and Ballmer and Gates showing "something" the day after seems schizofrenic to me. #4 - People, world wide, have spoken with their wallets. Microsoft has sold hundreds of millions of their operating systems in 2007 while Apple remains in single digits at about a 6% market share.
Here is a NYT article that summarizes the 2007 sales of PCs as provided by IDC: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/16/what-recession-pc-sales-stay-strong/ . Apple continues to rely on negative advertising to garner market share. Its ads take the worst of the sentiment of Windows Vista at Apple blogs and state them as fact. Unfortunately, because we need to test our code on all OSs and browsers even when web traffic to our web sites of said OSs and browsers isn't squat. So, we have three Macs, a G-5, one with the last generation of the Apple OS and one with the most recent Apple OS. Compared to a Vista Business edition computer or even XP, they are less than desirable. |
