Microsoft boosts support for rival formats in Office | |

Microsoft is opening up Office to other file formats, slowly but steadily. On Wednesday, the company said it plans to add new formats to Office 2007, including the Open Document Format (ODF), Portable Document Format (PDF), and XML Paper Specification (XPS). The new formats will be added to Office as part of Service Pack 2 for Office 2007, due in the first half of next year. ODF, a rival document format to Office's native format, has become popular with governments and schools. Microsoft, acknowledging requests for compatibility with ODF, released a converter to allow Word users to open documents saved in the OpenDocument format. | ||

So they are going to add support for competing formats relatively soon but they will not support their own version of ODF until late 2009/2010. Interesting indeed. |

How long until the suit accusing Microsoft of abusing it's monopoly power because Office will be able to read/save in other file formats?

| While I applaud Microsoft for finally doing what users have asked for for the past 2 years, I have heard rumblings that this move was purely strategic in that they had to have something fast that would make Office 2007 eligible under government purchasing mandates with respect to ISO document standard compliance. Apparently, it was easier/faster for them to implement ODF than it was to change the existing MSXML to OOXML. |

ODF and OOXML are standards, it makes sense for Microsoft to provide load/save support for them... as thats what their customers want.
#1 - SP2 for Office 2007 will fully support the current version of ODF... while Office 2009 will support the newly ratified version of ODF. I don't see the issue there? Does OpenOffice support this new version of ODF now or in the next few months? No it does not as its only just been ratified... so there's no difference with Microsoft not supporting it right now or in the next few months either. That's the thing. They won't have support for OOXML, only the pre-ISO MSXML. A very anti-ODF Microsoft spent all that time & money to brute-force OOXML through ISO, and the result is they end up supporting ODF and not OOXML. It's hysterical. |

| #6: See, that's the funny thing. MS pushed OOXML into the Fast Track. The Fast Track is for mature standards candidates that are already established with working implementations. Now that OOXML has been strong-armed in, it's still full of problems with no implementations. MS should be ashamed that they bought a standard via the fast track and now they can't ship a product that supports it. It's pathetic in itself, but watching you guys defend it (as usual) is almost as sad. |
