WinFS was an ambitious effort to embed an integrated storage engine into the Windows operating system, and use it to create a shared data ecosystem. Although WinFS never shipped as a part of Windows, many of the underlying technologies have shipped, or will ship, in SQL Server and in other products. In this interview Quentin Clark traces the lineage of those technologies back to WinFS, and forward to their current incarnations. | ||

| WinFS should have been part of Vista but that was removed as well. |

Well... it was and in many ways it wasn't - what WinFS was to provide end users in the current version of Windows is largely there - albeit it was achieved in different ways. No, there isn't a new file system, but there needn't be after all. Tagging files and objects is certainly there and instant search is, too. Similarly, the meta data adjoining files and objects is there, and so is saved search and stacks... all the stuff Apple copied (Leopard only recently added tagging in a half-baked way - much like the half baked way they grafted so much of what was long planned and included in Windows - PDC Nov 2003... anyone?).
No, when you read the description of what WinFS was to provide Windows in practical terms, you'll see it in the current version - less the overhead. What's next... pretty obvious... WinFS meet MESH. Add a lot more intelligence and one's data starts to follow them around in the personal context of what they are doing at any one time - e.g., personal and individually relevant data that follows you and changes depending upon what you are doing... work... work stuff... home... home stuff...at home and something needs your attention at work and that data is delivered alongside the people and the context necessary to understand it. |
