5 Misunderstood Features in Windows Vista | |

| Lloyd: Is there any way to flag double posts to avoid them winding up on ActiveWin with one submitter posting a link on day one and another posting the same link on day 2 or later? |

The new site has two technologies that help, but no technology is going to be perfect.
The present site has nothing at all. What we are seeing out on the web is a mess. A larger mess driven by ad-driven dollars and a model that actually works against the use of technologies - including computers. Before I get into that, the new site does do a look up on both the title, lead content and the link. The problem is that so much rubbish is posted and re-posted all over the place. Take leading blogs.... most clip some text, add a bit of lame commentary and the blogger hits publish. It's garbage. It isn't journalism and it isn't helpful. It isn't unique in any way. Snarky, yes, but of very little value. So what happens is that various Awin admins see the same stories, with slightly different titles, and unique links and not having read their own site, the poster fogs out a dupe. It's sloppy. We've tried to mitigate that, but as I said, nothing will be perfect. I have suggested and built a content approval engine - posts would require review and an editor would release the content. I don't think that will work. The Awin guys want to view a page on the web or a mobile device, click a button and have the app do the rest. Ok, fine. I'm just the volunteer dev. I do think that is a huge mistake. I think it will add to the ground-clutter overflowing the bin-jo ditch that the web has become. The larger problems are all ad driven. Post DoJ -V MS bull.... where OEM's could bork any machine with any garbage someone was willing to pay them to stuff the box with... trash. Since the biggest hate MS, mom, apple pie, and all things I love, they drive the ads. The ads fund the businesses (online and off) and it all ends up a big steaming pile of bilge. The spec on the new site makes it easy for posters - too easy. I most respect "thoughtfulness" - the deliberate exercise of moderation. The web of today rewards those of similar thinking with snark... - endless walls of text (as if a couple of paragraphs are just too much to handle). We're breeding half-wits and slaves... and I blame myself and others much more powerful and capable. |

Lloyd: Thanks. As a former reviewer of Audiophile equipment for a couple of respected, but niche publications, I understand your frustration with web publishing and blogs in general.
