Shares in various hardware and software companies related to the Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT.O Xbox video game console were mostly lower on Friday, a day after the software giant said it would miss its fiscal 2002 shipment targets by as much as 40 percent because of weak sales in Europe and Japan.
A number of companies who supply games, hardware and manufacturing services were down on the news, most notably Nvidia, which makes the graphics chip for the console.

hmm... what game just sold 1,000,000 copies? I guess some people thought they came out with a good game.
And, if you have been playing along at home, you know that game sales are quite good, just hardware sales that are lacking.

Anon, I would contest your claim that there are no "must have" games, but you also need to remember that the system has only been out 6 monthes. I'm not looking to argue about the XBox with you. I don't think you can say there are any "must have" games on the GameCube either. And if you are not going to let Halo be called must have, I'm not sure you can really say that about PS2 either. Anyway, XBox is going to have a bunch of great games coming out over the next year... Medal of Honor: AA and Midtown Madness 3 are the first to just to my head, but there are many others. Just wait... and after E3, you can probably pick up a console for cheaper, too.

No, but there will be: Metroid and Zelda, just to name a few.
Halo is definately a must-have game, but that too is coming out for PC (and Mac). I recently bought an Xbox, and I'm impressed with its capabilities, but Halo is really the only game to push the envelope. I'm sure there will be more, but Xbox's biggest struggle will be overcoming game systems with 'history' like the GameCube. I, for one, will probably buy a GameCube (once I get a better paycheck...) just so I can have Metroid and Zelda, because those are the games I grew up playing.

mikekol, I don't think Halo will will be coming out for PC (or Mac, even though Mac is a PC, don't care what you say, it IS a personal computer) as Halo is an XBox exclusive.

Ok, first... Halo is one of the best games every made. Simple as that. FPS might be a dime a dozen... but Halo is not just another FPS.
Second, I love my Xbox. I have a blast playing it. I love pretty much everything about it. I have an ample selection of good games, especially for a system that's been out for such a short amount of time.
For instance, I play (and my roommates) the following quite often:
Halo
Amped (well... did, then we got Tricky... I miss Amped)
SSX Tricky
Project Gotham
DOA3
Tony Hawk
Games I want:
Rallisport Challenge
Jet Set Radio Future
There are a bunch more coming out soon that look awesome too, like that Mech one, and that one with the guy that kills zombies and wears leather. :-)
Oh, and Halo is INCREDIBLE online... and if it is a sign of the Xbox's online future, PS2 and the rest will be left in the dust.
All imho, of course. ;-)

ZDNet: "What? MS having some minor problems selling in Japan and Europe where the economies suck? Ok, I have an idea, let's write the headline so it sounds REALLY bad for MS, yeah, yeah, that's a great idea!"
Intelligent Person: "But, Playstation and GameCube sales aren't that great either."
ZDNet: "But they're not MS, and you forget, we have an agenda against MS!"

#13, all games for most all consoles run around $50, and if you are only going to buy the 'must haves' you will only have 2 or 3 games in your line up for any system. And get off your ass and drive to Blockbuster, goodness...

Halo is still planned for a Mac and PC release. The "only on XBOX" refers to the console space (i.e., the game won't be on PS2 or Gamecube).
#18 I wouldn't mind lower game prices either, but if they are already losing over $100 on each console, they need money from the games to become profitable. They could probably lower the price of the first-party games, but then they might get complaints from third parties. In most places the games are similarly priced to other consoles, unless you were referring to the UK, of which I have no knowledge.
Sodablue, last I read, GTA3 and State of Emergency are comming to the XBOX.

And if rumors hold true.
DOOM 3 and the unreal tournament based on it, will be an Xbox only release.

eldoen, not sure if I totally understood you, but Unreal Tournament isn't based upon Doom 3. It uses a totally different engine from Doom 3. Unreal Tournament uses an engine developed by Tim Sweeney's Epic Games, and Doom 3 uses an engine developed by John Carmack's id Software.
Unreal Championship will be an Xbox game, as will Doom 3. Both are likely to be exclusive to the XBOX in the console space due to limitations of the other platforms, but Doom 3 will also be on the PC and Mac.
Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal 2 will be on the PC with possible Mac ports.

I honestly don't understand why people like #25 do not want competition in the marketplace.
