One day after the resignation of the One Laptop Per Child project's president was publicly revealed, the OLPC's founder and chairman said that the group's XO laptop may evolve to use only Windows XP as its operating system, with open-source educational applications such as the homegrown Sugar software running on top.
OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte also told The Associated Press on Tuesday that an insistence upon using only free, open-source software had hampered the XO's usability and scared away potential adopters.
For instance, the Sugar graphical user interface aimed at children "grew amorphously" and "didn't have a software architect who did it in a crisp way," he said. Also, the laptops don't support the latest versions of Flash animation, which is widely used on children's and educational Web sites.

Another real-life reminder that linux on a desktop/laptop... ain't SHITE. Its nice to have a spoonful of reality ever so often.

That's nice except WinXP, according to MS, is reaching it's EOL. What are they going to do then?

How many zeros in the cheque MS wrote? Funny how none of this was a problem during the entire development cycle of the OLPC. However, if they want to make it more expensive due to the Microsoft tax, let them.

They stated a couple weeks ago that they would continue to support XP on low powered laptops and devices.

Hey latch how about, you know, actually backing up what you say with collaborating evidence. Got a link that shows that they wrote a big cheque?
Also if you read the article you would see that MS is offering office and Windows on conventional laptops for 3 dollars for students in developing countries. My guess is this tax you are talking about won't amount to much or in the case of OLPC will be giving the software to them for free or what amounts to free.

#5: I have no direct evidence that MS influenced this at all, but there's always history to fall back on. I remember very recently that there was some funny business in Nigeria. I, and a lot of others, suspected that MS had bribed the Nigerian company that made the Mandriva deal to switch to Windows. MS apologists like Ketchum sputtered about how dare I accused the saintly Microsoft blah blah blah. A week later it comes out that MS did bribe the Nigerian company. I didn't hear any follow-up from the MS apologist crowd saying I was right after all. Nope, nothing but crickets.
Negroponte's excuses are lame. The XO laptop is so underpowered that it choked on the Adobe Linux Flash driver, so they went to the FOSS implementation. I'm not sure how bloated XP is going to help that.

So what you are saying is that when someone presents something that is pro MS you can come running in saying back it up with facts. When you come in here to bash you can do it with no evidence that that is the case. The fact is there is no evidence that they "bribed" there way onto the OLPC. In fact all evidence points to the fact that they will supply the software for fee or almost for free. Same old latch - if you don't have something to bash MS on you just make something up.

#7: No, that's not what I'm saying at all so please stop putting words in my mouth. I don't comment on the vast majority of articles here. However, whenever one of the usual microbots starts spouting nonsense, I will comment with backing data if I can find it. I am entitled to voice my opinion, just like anyone else. I notice you're not quite as nitpicky when one of your fellow microbots says something stupid or has nothing to back up what they said.

It is interesting how you twist things around in order deflect that fact that you were wrong. Making a statement of fact is much different then holding and opinion. You inferred that MS bribed their way onto the OLPC laptop with nothing to back it up and you got called on it. Don't go after people for spouting nonsense when you do it yourself. Just looking for a little consistency here.

latch - "Negroponte's excuses are lame."
Time to nail this good samaritan to a cross. If he DARE mention the weaknesses of linux and the strengths of windows... CRUCIFY HIM!
latch - "I have no direct evidence"
So, what you're saying is that you are a big bowl of worthless rant with nary a fact to back up any of your verbal burps. You really need to educate yourself on how the world works.
