XP SP3 Released to MSDN/TechNet Subscriber Downloads | |

While the planned release schedule for XP SP3 stated MSDN/TechNet subscribers would be receiving the update on May 2, a few days after the public release, Microsoft appears to have listened to the numerous complaints on its TechNet forums and has posted the bits to both the MSDN and TechNet Subscriber Downloads. | ||

| Its still not posted on the OEM Partner site. This is more evidence that MS makes millions off of small OEMs at a group, but cares little about us. |

| I'd be willing to bet that it is in response to the backlash they got when they announced Vista SP1 went RTM but didn't release it on MSDN for weeks and not to the public for even longer. |

| Before you waste a CD be aware that you cannot slipstream XP SP3 from within Vista. If you do your product key may not work because it makes api calls from the installed OS. You have to slipstream it from an XP machine, or within a virtual machine running XP. |

Seems to slipstream fine from Vista Ult X64 SP1, burned it and installed it on my laptop OK. and activated fine.
though, one's millage may vary then. |

Also to note,
1. Product key install doesn't apply to VLK copies. 2. It doesn't service the actual Media Center app in XPMCE, just the baseline OS. Update rollup 2 and the last update rollup (Dec 2006) is not included in XPSP3. 3. Same thing for WMP10 (which is included in XPMCE 2005). So, even after applying SP3, there are critical security updates presented on Windows Update. 4. Doesn't service .NET Framework which is preinstalled on XPMCE or XP Tablet PC editions. 5. Breaks TweakMCE powertoy. 6. No updated images for XPMCE and XPTPC. What does it this show, third-class treatment for XPMCE and XP Tablet PC editions. |

I would be very suprised if MCE wasn't in maintenance mode (life support) at this point.
After all, MS wants people to move up to Vista Premium/Ultimate. They don't want them staying with MCE. Might see security fixes when needed, but I'm quite sure it's feature frozen at this point. TL |

| Tried to upgrade my MCE PC to SP3 and ended with endless reboot of the machine. Luckily, I can still boot into Safe Mode and revert back the changes. |
