Last week, Tim Sweeney made some dire predictions regarding the overall future of the PC as a gaming platform. On TGDaily, he was widely quoted saying things like "PCs are good for anything, just not games."
Alex St. John disagrees, sort of.
Alex St. John is co-founder and CEO of WildTangent. Before he founded the company in 1998, he was one of the writers and essential in the creation of Microsoft's DirectX libraries. St. John was also Microsoft's "games evangelist" and pushed the PC and Windows as a key gaming platform.
St. John's current endeavor concentrates on online and downloadable gaming for Internet-connected PCs. The company allows players to play games in several ways by offering free, ad-supported sessions, sessions paid for by gamers via "WildCoins" micropayments, and through full game purchases. A front-end gaming portal, referred to by WildTangent as a "console" even though it's PC-based, offers both casual and enthusiast-quality games through a simple interface. | ||

The figures for Xbox sales was recently published. I believe in a six month time frame Xbox generated 5 billion in revenues of which, 500 million was profit for MS.
Previous figures showed that on 3.5 billion dollars of sales on Xbox there was a net loss to MS in revenue. Do the math. It's pretty scary for any company, with the possible exception of Nintendo which makes a rather lame console. |

Gee, if this isn't a self serving pronouncement, I don't know what is. St. John has his crap software, WildTangent, installed by some of the hardware vendors. When I see it on a computer, it is one of the first pieces of crap ware that I uninstall.
Here is what one web site said that attempts help computer users rid themselves of trash software like St.John's: "WildTangent is an online game network that includes WildTangent Web Driver, WildTangent GameChannel, WildTangent Multiplayer Library, and WildTangent Updater. WildTangent may be installed onto your computer through AOL Instant Messenger, as part of their online games. WildTangent can automatically update itself and talk to its parent servers, which is where things might get annoying for you: WildTangent may transfer anonymous information about you." |

Wild Tangent? Seriously?
I seem to remember that these guys are basically adware/spyware purveyors. At any rate, reading the article certainly convinced me of one thing... this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. One point in particular. Consoles are not JUST DRM-machines (which, I admit, they are)... they're also designed *specifically* for games. There is a reason that my $300 Xbox 360 has games on it that still look basically as good as the games that only run well on a $3000 PC. This guy has an obvious bias. His company makes PC games. He might be playing a different tune if he made console games. IMHO, PC gaming is within 5 years of being dead. I used to be a hard-core PC gamer. I dutifully upgraded my PC almost every year so I could play the latest and greatest. But guess what... I was broken of that *bad* habit by my Xbox 360... and things are only going to get better. I'm an avid PC Gamer. There is a huge amount of profit available in the PC Gaming market. Moreso, imo, than Consoles. But they are both at a point of convergence. Whomever pulls it off best will make the inroads. His "Orb" is an interesting beginning to the PC Gaming's attempt to build in "console like" attributes. Once consoles start adding "pc like" attributes I may start using them again.
Personally. If the XBox had Keyboard & Mouse, Multi-Monitor, & Web browsing support I'd use it hands down. |
