The chief executive of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, said Monday that his company's legal woes in Europe, which have so far resulted in $2.6 billion in fines, were poised to improve following the software maker's decision last week to disclose thousands of pages of confidential code to rivals. | ||

| Microsoft's troubles with the EU will end when MS stops its anticompetitive behaviour, and not a moment sooner. Announcements like this sound about as stupid as Bush's "Mission Accomplished". I love the last sentence in the summary from Ballmer, "But it is a path we have committed ourselves to because we think it is good for customers and is consistent with our legal obligations." Yeah, right. It's purely coincidence that MS suddenly believes interoperability is good for customers right around the time that the EU forced them to. If it's the right thing to do, Mr. Ballmer, why did MS drag its heels over the past 3-4 years with regard to the EU decision & disclosure of server APIs?? Oh well. This isn't the first time I've read an MS PR piece where they spin a legal order as if it was a decision MS made all on its own. |

| I hope that the EU forces Apple to sell Mac OS X separately from their hardware; document the communication protocols between iPods and iTunes so that competing software/devices can interoprate; and forces iTunes to sell music in OGG format by default. |
