Microsoft Press Release |
Posted By: Jonathan Tigner |
Consistent with its efforts to promote further interoperability across the Web, Microsoft Corp. is now configuring the settings in Internet Explorer 8, the upcoming version of its browser, to render content — by default — using methods that give top priority to Web standards interoperability.
The progressive evolution of the Web has necessitated that browsers such as Internet Explorer include multiple content-rendering modes – both supporting strict interpretation of certain Web standards and also supporting behaviors designed to maintain compatibility with existing Web sites. Web site designers generally have the ability to specify which mode they are designing for; in the absence of specific instructions from a Web site, browsers are pre-set to use one of the modes by default.
Internet Explorer 8 has been designed to include three rendering modes: one that reflects Microsoft’s implementation of current Web standards, a second reflecting Microsoft’s implementation of Web standards at the time of the release of Internet Explorer 7 in 2006, and a third based on rendering methods dating back to the early Web. The newest rendering mode is forward-looking and preferred by Web designers, while the others are present to enable compatibility with the myriad sites across the Web that are currently optimized for previous versions of Internet Explorer.

This is one of the best announcements I've heard from Microsoft in quite awhile. (Wait... W2k8 was just announced... but it wasn't a total surprise like this!)

Wow! It sounds very promising; I hope they will be able to implement it.

Agreed, this is the smartest thing I've seen MS do in a long time. I wish I could remember which Microbot I argued with about IE standards support, and I got told what a moron I was for suggesting IE8 should be in compliance mode by default. It would be the end of the Universe, I was told. Oh well, shows what I know. Good for MS for making the right decision.

#3: I have a feeling it will "break the web" just like Y2k crashed all the world's IT systems. ;) If it does, I guess whoever said you were a moron for your suggestion would be vindicated. Maybe you should make a wager with them. ;)

"latch is a moron" is always a proper response, since it is correct 100% of the time.
And only suckers every believe anything he has to say, since most of the "complaints" about Microsoft turn out to be completely false -- remember the RTM lie?.

if Microsoft said that water is wet, Latch would find fault
I woudn't be too surprised if he was some fat stooge that lives in his mother's basement, wears a tin foil fat 24/7 and eats power bar while squeezing some grip strenghtening toy
dude, get out, get some fresh air, find a woman..even if you have pay for it

#5: Gee, is that parkkker calling me names instead of ever refuting any points in a rational argument? I thought so. Hey parkkker, the schoolyard called. They want their mentality back. I don't know why I answer you. Your posts are entirely devoid of anything worthwhile. You can never counter anything, and instead you just deny and insult. I guess I take pity on you. Nobody else ever responds to your nonsense, and I don't want you to get lonely.
#6: It takes a true genius to accuse me of always finding fault with MS in a thread where I am praising them.

#7 I tried a rational argument during your Groklaw/Valentine/RTM hatefestival of lies.
It didn't work. You just lied about it being a typo.
There is no point in composing a rational argument for a deranged, lying hatemonger like you.
Its a waste of time.

Obviously, the web and technologies used opposite its potential have and continue to evolve.
Microsoft has a continuous responsibility to support both what was and what is yet to be developed.
With legitimate requests to work better with established standards Microsoft developed not only IE 8 but server and tools, designed with the same standards compliance in mind.
Initially, they, as they often must do, favored what was already deployed. I assess to accommodate the large number of companies with non-standards based sites.
That was not viewed as being as important as a more standards compliant rendering mode as the default and again, opposite customer requests and those willing to use the courts to force how they aligned the product, Microsoft responded favorably to those placing standards ahead of backward compatibility.
From where I stand, I see a company trying to support its customers and operate effectively as the globalization of software unfolds and evolves around us and their own products. By globalization, I do not mean the spread, or use of software globally in any physical sense, but in the larger context of how software is changing to face other software, regardless of what type, platform, or device it runs on.
I see a company trying to do the right thing as best as it can and serve the largest number of customers.
Practically, I see a company that reasoned, wisely, I assess, that enterprises requiring quirks mode as the default, being able to delay any roll-out of IE 8. Obviating any practical reason to not use standards mode as the default in the browser.
Latch can’t see that; he is blinded by hate. That has to suck to live that way.

#8: I do the best I can.
#9: Which thread was that again? The one where MS lowered the Vista system requirements to help out Intel? The one where senior MS execs emailed each other that Vista was crap? The one where OOXML got the smackdown at the ISO BRM? The one where it was discovered that MS drastically changed the audio/video driver model late in the Vista development stage? Oh right, you meant the one where an MS exec in charge of steering Vista development flushes it out early so he can hit the escape hatch and cash his Amazon cheque. You must be mistaken. I don't see RTM anywhere there, only RC1. Maybe you should have the nurse check your meds.

Latch can’t see that;...
Latch can't understand that. It appears to be in English, but it makes no sense. I'm assuming that, amongst the sentence fragments and liberal helping of misplaced commas, there was some kind of point being made? Here I am praising MS for making the right decision, and you're still hating on me. It must really suck being blinded by hate.
btw, assuming you are Ketchum's daughter, you're infringing on your dad's exclusive overuse of the word 'assess' and his habit of using a comma after every third word.

#12, Yes, I am his daughter, Lauren, if you must know. Trit, the youngest of the girls.
Latch, you attacked me the first day I started to post here. You seem to hate everything around you and you just can't get my dad out of your system and that is more than a little weird. He doesn't come by here unless one of us asks him to. Lately he's been very busy helping a bunch of kids in the U.K. with a network site designed to help them place get placed in jobs... among many other people he helps every day. You are filled with hate and anyone who can read, can see that. Get some help, or a hobby, or a girlfriend, or something...

#13: Latch, you attacked me the first day I started to post here.
Oh please. I refuted your point of view, which is not the same as attacking you personally.
You seem to hate everything around you
Considering I only ever talk about MS here and how little you know about me, I'm not sure how you can make such a determination. Or am I a hater because I don't share your family's passion for Microsoft?
and you just can't get my dad out of your system and that is more than a little weird.
I enjoyed the debates I had with your dad. It was a lot of fun maneuvering him into admitting some MS bad deed, only to watch him shuck & jive with the nest of them to avoid doing so.
You are filled with hate and anyone who can read, can see that.
So harsh. I'm filled with disdain for MS, their unethical way of operating and the legions of Microbots they have around them to apologize & explain away their transgressions.
