NVIDIA to Acquire AGEIA Technologies | |

NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), the world leader in visual computing technologies and the inventor of the GPU, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AGEIA Technologies, Inc., the industry leader in gaming physics technology. AGEIA's PhysX software is widely adopted with more than 140 PhysX-based games shipping or in development on Sony Playstation3, Microsoft XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and Gaming PCs. AGEIA physics software is pervasive with over 10,000 registered and active users of the PhysX SDK. "The AGEIA team is world class, and is passionate about the same thing we are—creating the most amazing and captivating game experiences," stated Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. Now AMD/ATI is finally dead...
R.I.P. I was a really big admirer to ATI, but live going further... My HD3870 is last one, I think. Next card, unfortunately, will be NVIDIA. |

why do yo say that.
DX11 has physics built into the platform (or the rumor was that was occuring) and from what was hinted at wasn't compatable with the physx engine. Of course with nvidia buying ageia, that may change only time will tell. el |

Microsoft has been talking dx11 since the days of dx7, more details since the release of dx10 though of course.
Since dx 10.1 was locked down around beta 2 of vista sp1 work has been full bore on dx11, even rumors that MS mention that DX11 would be available late 2k8 early 2k9 at CES. so yes I am ok:) just look at these presentations. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/aa937787.aspx on ms site, there are forums that talk about physx engine probably getting the rub out with dx11. ATI had to slap two chips on one card to win the crown. It is not all the impressive of an achievement considering the fact that even if they did beat Nvidia's cards it was a by a rather small margin. I am personally not all that impressed with the card. There was a big brouhaha about this too. Hardocp is saying that in real world gaming results the 3870x2 is far from impressive and the Nvidia cards are actually faster. It all comes down to methodology and testing. Hardocp uses some now unique ways of testing - they actually play games with the cards and do not test with the built in benchmarks or other synthetic type testing. For example some other sites use a cut scene from one game for testing and then someone equate this to how the card will perform in game. | #6: ATI also has a well-deserved, hard-fought reputation for craptastic video drivers. So no matter how smoking their card is, I would stay far away from it. nVidia probably has a new card in a month or two that will smoke this ATI unit. I used to love ATI cards, but that was 10+ years ago when they were good. I still remember the ATI Graphic Solution, which would emulate CGA on monochrome monitors so you could play games without spending a fortune on colour gear. |

The X2 is generally faster than the GeForce 8800 Ultra, and it has HD video decode acceleration that Nvidia's older G80 GPU lacks. The X2 does draw more power and generate more noise under load than the GeForce 8800 Ultra, but it's not unacceptable on either front for a card in this class. | Not to forget the HD 3870 X2 also beats NVIDIA's monster in power consumption WHICH CANNOT BE IGNORED. With HD 3870, ATI's back in the game. However, with GeForce 9 series arriving very soon, ATI will be out of the high-end game soon, though it'll be there in the mid-end and budget gaming markets. |

3870 X2 power consumption is better at idle. Under load it uses significantly more than the ultra because they had to put two cores on the card to beat it. The fact is they had to slap two GPU's on a board to beat Nvidia and are a year late to the party. The card is just not that impressive for those facts alone. For the price you would be much better of going with dual 8800GT. Plus I agree with what Hardocp is saying in their review. I think most sites have gotten away from testing real world performance and focus on synthetic benchmarks. Who cares how fast a card runs a cut scene or a level of a game with no enemies in it. |

Selectively pulling out two quotes misrepresents what the reviews says. Here are a couple more from the HardOCP review: "The Radeon HD 3870 X2 does not beat a stock clocked GeForce 8800 GTX right now; it only comes close to its performance level. It took AMD this long to come up with a video card that almost matches a GeForce 8800 GTX in performance and it took two GPUs to do it." Or "The 3870 X2 is a good value at $449, but the GeForce 8800 GTX is a better value if you can find one on sale like those linked above" My opinion stands. AMD/ATI has fallen way behind on the graphics front in the high end is playing catch up and not doing a very good job. The only way they were able to come close was to slap two GPU's on their card. Take Dual 8800GT's and it smokes this card for roughly the same price. Then there is the 9800GX2 and the rest of the 9000 series card from Nvidia to contend with coming out by the end of February. |
