Philips Welcomes Microsoft Support for DVD+RW Format | |

Royal Philips Electronics today indicated that Microsoft, at its annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) this week, will announce their intention to incorporate the DVD+RW format into its next version of the Windows operating system. DVD+RW is designed from the ground up to be compatible with PC and consumer applications and will handle both video and data storage in an optimized and compatible manner. ``Philips is very happy to be adding Microsoft to the growing list of companies supporting DVD+RW and we are pleased to work with them to add support for DVD+RW storage in the next version of Windows. We believe that support in Windows is a key milestone in our effort to bring DVD+RW benefits to a broad set of users,'' said Jan Oosterveld, Philips senior vice president, corporate strategy. | ||

Now, let's see how long it takes before the Register and all the kooks start saying "OMG, Microsoft is only supporting DVD+RW and DVD-RW and other standards will be blocked! Look at them abusing their monopoly!"
Of course, more intelligent and unbiased individuals will realize that this just means that MS' media products will only support DVD+RW, but if you have a DVD-RW or similar drive, you can install its drivers and use other media software that supports it just fine in Windows. |

I still think that MS went with DVD+RW because...
DVD-R/RW is an established, well-working, well-supported standard that provides excellent compatibility with all but the most esoteric DVD players. That means that, since DVD-R/RW isn't really struggling, but doing quite well, Microsoft didn't see much of a way to get 'control' of the format so it could steer it in a direction compatible with theiir 'vision'. I think they see DVD+RW as this struggling little kitten that needs saving, and will be oh so appreciated for the shot-in-the-arm that their official support brings. They have _something_ up their sleeve. It's just not clear what yet. Damn, see what a cynic this company can make you become ? :) TL |

| troll, +RW is a bit better at data... you can add/remove data on the fly whereas -RW wants you to overwrite the entire disc--although it should be possible to achieve this functionality in -RW, it's just not there yet. There are probably other beenfits as, yes, the spec started by focusing on data/backup issues; one could say that -RW is a superior format for video formats. The other issue is compatibility... when you start looking at device compatibility +RW is way behind, but newer devices are being built to have +RW compabitility. I've seen claims that it'll be 90+% compatibile, but I think this has to be based on new manufacture going forward. A poll/test towards the end of 2001 showed device compatibility at 90+% for DVD-RW, and DVD+RW way behind at about 60-65%. |

What the heck ARE you talking about ? I enjoy 100% compatibility, low costs discs, and the benifit of a well supported industry-standard format with few complaints from users. Why would I worry ? TL |
