By now everyone knows, or should know, about Linux. But while the freeware operating system continues to make inroads powering servers all over the world, the personal computer market has been tougher to crack. Now, however, there’s a Linux that’s as mindless to install as Microsoft’s Windows. LINUX FOR THE MASSES comes courtesy of Lycoris, which, like a certain other software company, is based in Redmond, Wash. In fact, Lycoris used to be called Redmond Linux and that name survives in what pops up on your screen when its operating system, Desktop/LX, begins booting. Historically, Windows has been somewhat easier to install on a desktop computer than Linux. (I know I’ll receive a lot of e-mail about this.) In the early days, you had to know a lot about your computer to install either one. Since then, both operating systems have become a lot easier to install, with Windows getting the slight edge in the “pressing-the-button-and-walking-away” category, if not in speed. | ||

I find it amusing that every time someone says "This linux distro is so easy to install, anyone can do it! It's the easiest Linux distro ever!" And, when you look at, they've taken great pains to make everything look like Windows.
So, from this we can draw a fairly educated assumption that if you want to make Linux easy to use and accessible the largest group of people, just copy Windows! It makes one wonder that, if they're going to buy a copy of Linux that looks, acts, and performs just like Windows, why not get the original? |

You know, you really _can_ have the power of Unix and ease-of-use at the same time, and yet. It has a true one-button installer that really does work. It is, in fact, the only Unix distribution to truly be useable by the everyday person.

#9 - I keep hearing about this MacOS X. I've heard it's a very good copy of Windows XP, although the UI isn't nearly as nice. Apprently the Mac finally has many of the innovations introduced long ago by Windows such as color graphics, preemptive multitasking, and wireless ethernet. #14 - How can you say that? MacOSX is the first release of MacOS to have preemptive multitasking, something Microsoft was innovating with back in the 1980's...
MacOSX in 2002 = Microsoft Xenix in 1982. |

Yes, as #20 points out, Microsoft bought a System V license from AT&T and ported it to the 68000, PDP-11 and x86 back around 1980. In the early part of the 80's Microsoft did all their DOS development on PDP-11 machines running Xenix with a cross compiler. Apparently, when Microsoft first started talking to IBM about the PC they suggested using Xenix. But the hardware resources required to run Unix at that time were quite substantial, and the license from AT&T added quite a bit to the costIBM didn't think they could keep the price down to a point where it would sell. (i.e. under $3000) IBM was also concerned with dealing with effectively AT&T because they were both under anti-trust investigations at the time and for them to cooperate in this manner might not appeal to the trust-busters. That's why Microsoft then opted for the QDOS solution. SCO was contracted to support and maintain MS Xenix early on, and then in the mid 80's Microsoft sold all rights for Xenix to SCO as at that point they had begun using LANManager and moving the direction of distributed network computing instead of the "Unix all-on-one-box with serial terminals as clients" model. |

#17 - Windows doesn't cost $299. It's about $150 for Windows XP Pro, and just under $100 for XP Home.
