A feisty Gates disputes Microsoft's rep as imitator
Time: 00:30 EST/05:30 GMT | News Source: Seattle PI | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Bill Gates met with a small group of bloggers in Redmond yesterday, and one of them, Jonathan Snook, learned that one of the fastest ways to get a rise out of the Microsoft chairman is to say that the company has often capitalized on the innovations of others.

Another attendee, Kip Kniskern of LiveSide.net, has posted a transcript of the session with Gates, including the part with Snook about innovation. (I wasn't there, but I confirmed the transcript's authenticity with a Microsoft representative.) The exchange started with Snook saying he feels Microsoft "has certainly been reactionary."

"Especially when we started the company," Gates responded, sarcastically, to laughter. "I knew that three years later, Apple would come along." He joked that he must have been reacting in advance.

Best quote from the article:

Gates: "Every stupid thing we did first."

Its true. Microsoft is a great innovator. They were screwing over partners and customers long before anyone else thought of doing it.

#1 - Obligatory response...

But we all know that Apple does stupid much better. :)

Gates is just like parkkker. You criticize Microsoft and right away he starts banging on Apple.

#3: Obligatory counter-response...

We all know that Apple does everything much better. :-)

Gates was making the point that there are a group of people who tell lies about Microsoft all the time and it is a bit tiresome. He used a specific example of Apple being the innovator.

As he said:

"I mean, people think Apple Computer was an early personal computer company. Well, let's see, I had licensed 17 people to do personal computer basics before I did the Applesoft BASIC, before I went out with Steve Wozniak and did the version that worked with a cassette tape, because they didn't have the disk yet. But Apple invented personal computing."

The three stooges compulsively lie about Microsoft ... as this thread demonstrates.

#6: Who cares if Gates licensed BASIC to 17 other platforms you've never heard of. Apple was the first company to bring a computer to market that the average household could afford with an operating system that was simple and well-written. You should read the source code for the Apple ][ monitor ROM. It's a thing of beauty. Woz was brilliant for packing a buttload of stuff into a tiny space, both in hardware and in software. If Gates is trying to claim that MS was the father of personal computing, he's dreaming in Technicolor.

#7: "Apple was the first company to bring a computer to market that the average household could afford"
I have to differ with your definition of affordable! If it were so affordable, Apple would be MS today or at least have a much bigger chunk of the market. MS did was what VHS did – they did not lock their software into expensive, proprietary hardware. This is what drove the price down and brought home computing to the masses.

#9 By 15406 (216.191.227.68) at 12/7/2007 9:15:44 AM
#8: The fact that the Apple was affordable doesn't mean that all families would all run out and buy one. At the time, a personal computer was very much a niche product. Apple's success led others to also enter the market, like Commodore and IBM. At any rate, it's pointless trying to compare Apple and MS in the late 70's/early 80's as they were targeting different parts of the market; Apple with hardware, MS with software.

#9: What was your first computer?

The Commodore PET came out the same year as the Apple II.

"The Commodore PET (Personal Electronic Transactor or maybe rumored to be named after the "pet rock" fad) was designed by Chuck Peddle. It was first presented at the January, 1977, Winter Consumer Electronics Show and later at the West Coast Computer Faire. The Pet Computer also ran on the 6502 chip, but it cost only $795, half the price of the Apple II. It included 4 kb of RAM, monochrome graphics and an audio cassette drive for data storage. Included was a version of BASIC in 14k of ROM. Microsoft developed its first 6502-based BASIC for the PET and then sold the source code to Apple for AppleBASIC. The keyboard, cassette drive and small monochrome display all fit within the same self contained unit. "

The TRS-80 also came out in 1977.

"In 1977, Radio Shack introduced its TRS-80 microcomputer, also nicknamed the "Trash-80". It was based on the Zilog Z80 processor (an 8-bit microprocessor whose instruction set is a superset of the Intel 8080) and came with 4 kb of RAM and 4 kb of ROM with BASIC. An optional expansion box enabled memory expansion, and audio cassettes were used for data storage, similar to the PET and the first Apples. Over 10,000 TRS-80s were sold during the first month of production. The later TRS-80 Model II came complete with a disk drive for program and data storage. At that time, only Apple and Radio Shack had machines with disk drives. With the introduction of the disk drive, applications for the personal computer proliferated as distribution of software became easier. "

The part he didn't say wais that half of products never actually made it to market.

#10: An Appe ][. Several of my friend also had Apples. Some others had C64s.

#11: Did you have some kind of point to make when listing those early crap computers? It would be helpful if you could offer some coherent thoughts instead of just posting quotes and expecting everyone to connect the dots to figure out what the hell you're on about.
