Just how thick is Microsoft? Everywhere you go, there are advertisements for how unstable Windows is. You can see the ad on train arrival displays, airport screens, on the LCD display in elevators, on video games in entertainment parlours, on massive projections on the sides of buildings or even while Bill Gates is on stage demoing Windows. | ||

| The BSOD is totally useless to 99% of users out there. Any devs will get more from a dump file than from the BSOD. When a kernel fault happens, put up a nice screen saying the system needs to reboot, and have a button so that a dump can be savedright then and there if not already pre-configured to do so. |

| The real question is how thick the media is. I have setup over 300+ Vista machines, and less then 1% has trouble (maybe 2 or 3, but only because they had custom software). |

| I'm hoping the point of the article is to describe how "cryptic" the BSOD message... I agree they should redo the whole BSOD message and along with the pleasant comments about having to restart... just say its because ATI, nVidia and HP cannot write drivers! :-) |

The BSOD screen is limited by design - faults resulting in them provide about zero time necessary to capture much information - what a BSOD code actually does is something of a dark art and a pretty cool technical accomplishment. Think about it - how much time could there be and what resources exist, exactly, to record such an event [ok, with a virtualized monitor parallel to an OS install, yeah... maybe... - maybe one day we'll have that]. For now, a BSOD code provides a great deal and good techs leverage them fully. |

I personally think the screens should be black instead of blue.
Think of it... you can still keep the BSOD moniker, black is much more formal, it is the official color of the intellengencia as well as the ultra hip and groovy, and its makes a bold statement to the computing public. So what's not to love? |

| There's another screen in Vista called BGSOW (blue green screen of wait) and it appears every something is updated. I'm sick of "Configuring updates...please wait..." They improved the installation time, but people dont install every month...patching is an absolute mess on Vista. Wait till SP1 comes...on some computers it''ll never finish installing on Gold RTM. MS needs urgently to find out a way to patch products fast now...VS 2005 SP1 also took 1 1/2 hours on my Core 2 Duo. |

| #5: Think about it. How many *real* users (not the ones whose hands you hold) actually give a rat's ass about the contents of a BSOD? How many just jam the reset button, reboot and continue? The BSOD screen is useless for almost everyone who uses Windows. I work with kernel developers and they don't give a crap about the BSOD contents. A dump file is far more useful, giving the code where the fault occurred and the faulting module. BSOD only gives you some general stack info and a list of modules in memory. |

| The best solution would be to replace the current BSOD screen for the general user base with something more useful, but have a configurable option to be able to activate it for developers or integrators who really, really, must have it. After all, the BSOD info is contained in the full and mini dumps, and is also put in the registry on reboot. So, the information wouldn't be lost in any case, whether some user has to look at it and then reach for the reset button or not. |

#6, you can change the color of BSOD (either background or font color) with the software. I forgot what's called. I had it when I used it for my win98 system. I have not tried on XP or Vista. I am on XP right now. I got rid of Vista.
I am sure that someone will help you out with this. |
