Linux Losing Market Share to Windows Server
Time: 09:18 EST/14:18 GMT | News Source: eWeek | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

Linux growth in the U.S. x86 server market has, over the past six quarters, started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to Windows Server and the market as a whole.

The annual rate at which Linux is growing in the x86 server space has fallen from around 53 percent in 2003, when Windows Server growth was in the mid-20 percent range, to a negative 4 percent growth in calendar year 2006, IDC Quarterly Server Tracker figures show.

Over the same time period, Windows has continued to report positive annual growth, outpacing the total growth rate in the x86 market by more than 4 percent in 2006, indicating that Linux has actually lost market share to Windows Server over this time.

All I can say is this is a sad but true fact.

Yea it makes me lol....

Windows Server 2008 is pretty hawt. Windows Small Business Server 2008 is even hawter.

"Experts say that migrations from Unix to Linux have slowed down because all the low-hanging fruit has now been picked."

Yup.

"In 2000, Windows comprised about half of the server operating system market, followed by Unix and Netware at about 17 percent each and Linux reaching towards 10 percent, she said, noting that today Windows owns about 70 percent, Linux about 20 percent, with Unix below 10 percent and Netware barely registering."

How it must pain eWeek to say this. Steven J. Vaughan Nichols has his fingers in his ears, shouting "la la la la I can't hear you! lalalalala!" I'm sure he'll find a way to twist this into big bad Microsoft pushing down the little guy, instead of finding any fault in Linux whatsoever.

this has been trending this way for years - and I assess, the trends being reflected, are what drove the EU to force MS into essentially giving away its IP.

It isn't enough for a company to simply be great - of no.... just like the US itself, the EU saw MS as being evil in some way.

Here's how I see their thoughts in the EU:

"Hey, you all have a media player in Windows....." "Take it out and why you're at it..... give us W2K3 for free - all of it, or find another way to sell your products in the EU..." "Oh, and give us money, too...!" "Now get out - you stinky Americans..."

Sad. Socialists. Try that crap down here, and you can bet your bottom that a good bit of breakfast beverage will find its way into a harbor someplace...

As far as I'm concerned, the EU can have a good bit of their breakfast from out of my bottom down by the harbor someplace...

Tea is a breakfast beverage?!?

...

Europeans and many other nations hate us, and all that we stand for, until they need or want something from us--usually this comes down to either our money or the blood of our soldiers.

I'm not much of a Linux person, but I'll say this...

It makes one HELL of an OS for NAS boxes.

Go Windows Server, go! And as MrHumpty said, Windows Server 2008 hasn't even released yet. Microsoft's enterprise and networking servers are absolutely tuned to people's needs, that's why it's going up....on the desktop it's a different story...more proof that MS is focussed now entirely on the enterprise.

Its never boring, to watch the marketplace gravitate to the BEST product.

This just goes to show the power of marketing. Microsoft has good marketing, and gets good market share gains. Linux has crappy marketing, and loses share. Just because a technology is winning the market share race, doesn't mean it is the better technology. There are many examples where the better technology loses to the inferior but better marketed product. VHS was inferior to Betamax, but the companies behind VHS had a better marketing machine. In the enterprise space, Microsoft enterprise products have a huge marketing machine behind them. I'd be amazed if they were to lose any significant market share because of it. Until Linux gets better advertising and marketing behind it, it will have little chance to compete on anything close to an even playing field.

Linux could be the absolutely best OS product ever created by humankind, but if no one knows about it outside the IT geek circuit, then it will never be able to make significant market share gains. That is one of the downsides to the F/OSS model. Less available money for such things as marketing campaigns.

#13 By 7754 (75.72.153.112) at 10/27/2007 12:44:16 PM
#12: I disagree. This isn't VHS vs. Betamax--the server market doesn't cater to average consumers. You'd have to be living under a rock if you're in IT and don't know about Linux. Besides, Linux has plenty of play in the media, and Linux has some very, very big players (IBM, Oracle, Novell, etc.) gunning for it.

The "Microsoft marketing" argument may have had a point 5 or 6 years ago, but that's certainly not the case anymore.

#12 "Linux has crappy marketing, and loses share"

Ummm ... what planet are you from? Linux has had 100 times the amount of free publicity Microsoft gets. Almost all of it is one-sided and biased and based on emotion and hatred of Microsoft.

#15 By 89445 (72.135.255.212) at 10/28/2007 3:43:08 PM
Not only does Linux have all of ZDnet and associates rooting for it and bashing Microsoft, huge industry players are pushing behind it to unthrown Microsoft. And you know what? Even with all of that bashing of Microsoft and pushing by IBM, Novell, etc., Microsoft is still kicking them all over the planet! It has nothing to do with marketing. It has to do with what works best in business and what can most easily be accomplished with thin-staffed IT departments.

Linux has some niches and fills them good. But Microsoft fills far more and is a perfectly stable and mature product. Windows NT stunk, Windows 2000 was huge improvement but Windows 2003 is darn near perfect in stability.

And it appears Linux is actually costing the business more than Windows. By the time you are done paying the upfront costs and the maintenance fees to get patches, Linux enterprise editions far exceed the cost of Windows. There is no longer a benefit of running Linux.

I apologise. I should have been more clear. I was mainly referring to the home / personal user, not the corporate IT types. I re-read my post, and realized that I hadn't made that point clear.
