Microsoft Reports 27% Revenue Growth; Fastest First Quarter Since 1999
Time: 01:17 EST/06:17 GMT | News Source: Microsoft Press Release | Posted By: Jonathan Tigner

Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $13.76 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2007, a 27% increase over the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.92 billion, $4.29 billion and $0.45, respectively.

“This fiscal year is off to an outstanding start with the fastest revenue growth of any first quarter since 1999,” said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “Operating income growth of over 30% also reflects our ability to translate revenue into profits while making strategic investments for the future.”

Microsoft’s businesses of Client, Microsoft Business Division, and Server and Tools grew combined revenue in excess of 20%, and experienced robust demand for Windows Vista, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, Windows Server, and SQL Server.

“Customer demand for Windows Vista this quarter continued to build with double-digit growth in multi-year agreements by businesses and with the vast majority of consumers purchasing premium editions,” said Kevin Johnson, president of the Platform and Services Division at Microsoft.

During the quarter, Microsoft’s two consumer focused divisions passed milestones with the successful close of the company’s largest ever acquisition, aQuantive, and Halo 3 achieving the biggest entertainment launch day in history.

“Backed by an amazing product line-up, our sales force, marketing teams, and partners delivered another excellent quarter,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft.

But I thought Vista wasn't selling...

Microsoft: 88 million copies of Vista shipped

And that's not including corporate volume licenses.

"The 88 million figure mostly includes Vista-installed PCs bought by consumers and small businesses, as well as packaged copies of Vista sold in stores or online.
It does exclude the tens of millions of Windows corporate volume licenses.
October 25, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Despite underwhelming consumers and being snubbed by enterprises, Windows Vista's numbers keep growing, with Microsoft Corp. saying Thursday that it has now shipped 88 million copies of the operating system, almost double the number of copies of XP in the same amount of time at its launch."

"almost double the number of copies of XP in the same amount of time at its launch"

And by that measure alone, Vista is lame. Vista would just be equaling Windows XP's sales performance if Vista had shipped between 110 to 120 million copies instead of the weak 88 million as stated. I reached this result assuming comparable market share adjusted for worldwide PC units for the sales periods of those two OSs. Context and historical data must be considered before taking current results and applauding them.

By my analysis, Vista is underperforming Windows XP sales by 25%.

Personally, I think Vista is fine, but let's not misrepresent how well it's selling... or should I say "shipping"?

On a side note: hurray for MSFT. Up 9% today!

#3, a big part of the story is that few are reporting the dramatic spike in PC purchases that is occuring and will continue - likely for the next two quarters. Most especially in laptops. SMB Servers are way up, too and we're sure seeing it.

#5 By 9589 (71.49.188.113) at 10/26/2007 2:09:11 PM
First of all, virtually every PC sold has a Microsoft OS on it. To determine what percentage are selling with Vista, you will need the for pay numbers from IDC of PC units sold. Until you have those numbers, you're just speculating.

More important, we know that the Apple numbers are 2.2 million units sold (their first quarter over 2 million units sold) for the quarter or about 6 million so far this year. So, the percentage of Apple to Microsoft is 6/88 = 6.8%. The "little" story is the almost tripling of Apple share vis-a-vis Microsoft.

Meanwhile, *nix is nowhere to be seen or heard from . . . about like usual.

ch, always predictably dour on msft, but I didnt hear that same analysis on apple's recent numbers. ch, just take it on the chin today bud, and come back monday with a fresh outlook ready to needle FUD into every nuance of every article.

"Windows Vista shipments exceed 85 million, compared to 45 million during the same period for Windows XP following its launch."

I just want to say, thank you, Microsoft!

After watching Microsoft take six years off - in the stock market. I put some money on them yesterday before the close and was rewarding very nicely!

#5, I used the IDC PC units sold numbers. I don't have the time to and wouldn't waste other people's time making up specific numbers to try to support my argument. The statement by Microsoft just struck me as selective statistics (aka PR with numbers).

#6, I didn't perform the analysis for Apple, because it doesn't concern me (right now). I don't own their stock and don't buy into their "culture" marketing mumbo-jumbo. I own MSFT, make a living off of their products, and I care about them being realistic and telling the whole story. If a company doesn't realistically and accurately measure itself, then how can it improve?

ch, the responsible one.

lol. and thats a wrap on the week. cya HATERS. make sure and pick up some bread on the way home, to help you sop up all the spill'd milk.

#5 "The "little" story is the almost tripling of Apple share vis-a-vis Microsoft. "

Except the 88 million figure does not include corporate licenses or XP licenses.

Apple has 3% of the world-wide PC market according to IDC.

#10 You're raising the best point made here - the matter is a global one - an enterprise perspective. And yes, as impressive as the OEM/Retail numbers are, as I shared originally above, that does not include the 10's of millions of corporate/enterprise seats sold.

Analyzing this is reveals an important question that isn't being asked: "where will they go from here?"

Apple is going to hit the ceiling really quickly and the reality is that as a percentage of global market, they have actually lost share with the exception of one quarter [2nd] in 2006. As the global economy has expanded, and it thankfully has, Microsoft has embraced it - clearly, Microsoft's efforts to unify the server room with clients [really began in 2003], is paying hugely for them - servers across the board, integration, central management and dependent services drive this [I used to hit this a lot in these threads in 2004, and was largely scoffed at <Pout, spit, kick...LOL - using the work we were doing with an ocular health-care company and integration as an example...]. Any case... the diversification gives them room to grow and similarly, they way MS has embraced and enabled emerging markets gives them a place to grow into - all the while, newer and very compelling designs continue to come from large and small OEM's - Gateway's latest all in one is gorgeous - and fast, too.

Finally, the same type of strategy is playing out in digital entertainment and devices - the Zune II, or Revenge of Zune - it's new features and design have teeth - that is going to hit Apple harder than most people now think - direct MS-DVR to Zune sync is going to be huge for people [I know, laugh away, but as you do, take a look at what is really there in that product - it's good stuff and multiple Zunes and three PC's are supported with one account and one price!]. I could go into ads and aQuantive and what that means, and should, but later in another thread. Sorry for the long post.

I have a daughter and son, ages 12 and 10, respectively. They both want iPods (not necessarily the touch versions) I'm not even sure they know what a Zune is. This is where Microsoft is failing! I can’t remember seeing a Zune commercial and I’m sure my kids can’t either. So come Christmas, I’ll be buying 2 iPods not Zunes.
Perhaps Microsoft should have used some that 240 million they paid for less than 2% of Facebook and spent in on a Zune ad campaign
