Device driver updates causing Vista to deactivate | |

After weeks of gruelling troubleshooting, I've finally had it confirmed by Microsoft Australia and USA -- something as small as swapping the video card or updating a device driver can trigger a total Vista deactivation. Put simply, your copy of Windows will stop working with very little notice (three days) and your PC will go into "reduced functionality" mode, where you can't do anything but use the web browser for half an hour. You'll then need to reapply to Microsoft to get a new activation code. How can this crazy situation occur? Read on for the sorry tale. | ||

| Once again, WPA and WGA do nothing to stop real Windows pirates while inconveniencing genuine users. The HP box I bought last Spring came with Home Premium, but if I were to decide to run Vista on it I'd be more likely to get the copy of Vista cracked by NoPE or Pantheon than the legit one that came with the PC just to avoid this kind of nonsense. Same principle applies when I play a game I've purchased. I get the no-CD crack just to avoid the hassle of having to swap discs. When will companies finally see that DRM does not stop commercial piracy, but instead only causes problems for paying customers? |

Hauppauge hasn't fixed the 4GB + x64 bug in their driver for over 10 months now (PVR150/500), resulting in a rather useless Vista Media Center application (records nothing, or better records green screens). To fix this, i have to reduce memory usage under 3200MB in MSCONFIG and reboot the PC. Within minutes i get a reactivation screen which fails since the key is already in use. Setting it again to the full 4GB and reboot i don't get the reactivation screen.
I am clueless what Microsoft measures. I mean the serial numbers on the memory sticks haven't changed. Or does Microsoft thinks that you also can fake that easily??? |

#2: There's is only one thief here that I am aware of. btw you're slipping back into your old persona where you do nothing in a debate but throw insults and attacks. Or is your post some bizarre way of defending DRM, specifically MS-branded DRM?

| I think Latch is saying that he buys a legit copy then gets the cracked version to avoid the DRM nonsense. Regardless, he is correct that DRM is a mess and in reality it only makes the product more of a target for pirates. |

#6: You remind me of an old boss I once had who never, ever misunderstood anyone... it's just that everyone else was unclear.
No deduction required. I said I had an HP box with Vista Home Premium, so I have a valid license. Obviously I don't run Vista or I would not be saying "but if I were to decide to run Vista on it...". I run XP on it. But if I were to run Vista, I might use a cracked copy just to avoid the WPA/WGA nonsense. Is that clear enough? |

Its quite known "down here" that APC Mag staff are shockingly useless at the best of times... I've been using Vista since beta 1... I've never had any activation issues... thus of course, no one else in the word has had them either /sarcasim off :-)
