Microsoft's Enterprise Storage Efforts Begin With Windows.Net | |

Microsoft plans to take its first major stab at the enterprise storage software market--and rival IBM--with the launch of Windows.Net servers later this year. Microsoft will begin its broad foray into the growing market by integrating Volume ShadowCopy Service (VSS) and virtual disk services (VDS) in its forthcoming Windows.Net server. Beyond Windows.Net, the company also plans to support the Internet storage networking protocols known as iSCSI and will integrate its front-end applications such as the Windows file system and Exchange to work transparently against leading NAS and SAN devices. iSCSI is an emerging Internet protocol for the SAN market, according to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. | ||

#2, Umm... did you even read the article, it has nothing to do with storing your home computers data on some third-party system.
These features are designed to make it easier for backups and retrieving point-in-time data. iSCSI is something your going to see more in enterprise data storage rather than through services for your home computer. |

| C'mon in Microsoft. Its about time some company came in and made this stuff a little cheaper. These fat cats are making a ton now, with unbelievable margins... and I (we) are footing the bill. The door is OPEN to competition and here it comes... |

mooresa56 - You've obviously priced out EMC equipment... Something like $2k per gigabyte, and that's not counting the cost of the frame, controller and so forth. Other interesting thing... say you ask for 10 Gigabytes. They actually sell you a pair of say 36 Gig drives mirrored, but you only have access to 10 gigs, the remaining 26 gigs goes empty until you pay the licensing fee. :)
And people say Microsoft price gouges! |

EMC prices are like SAP, insane. You get two choices: 1) Build a new enterprise data warehouse. 2) Buy your largest competitor...
