Microsoft Unveils Consumer Health Vision, Launches Technology Platform to Collect, Store and Share Health Information | |

Joined by nationally recognized medical providers, health-management device manufacturers and patient advocacy organizations, Microsoft Corp. today launched Microsoft® HealthVault, a software and services platform aimed at helping people better manage their health information. The company outlined its vision for ways that HealthVault can bring the health and technology industries together to create new applications, services and connected devices that help people manage and monitor their personal health information, including weight loss and disease management, such as for diabetes. Microsoft today also announced the availability of HealthVault Search, a powerful new vertical health search tool designed to work with the platform. Integrated with Live Search and accessible on the HealthVault Web site, this specialized health search engine intuitively organizes the most relevant online health content, allowing people to refine searches faster and with more accuracy, and eventually connect them with HealthVault-compatible solutions.

I'm normally a Microsoft fan, but I have to agree with TL here. This is a stupid and unnecessary move on Microsoft's part. Most of the big health care organzations already offer patients a web portal similar to this, but better.
First of all, from what I can tell, as a patient I'll need to enter all my medical information into HealthVault myself. It won't let me schedule appointments online with my doctor, or refill my prescriptions, or get access to information that my doctor entered into my record. In order to do these types of things, Microsoft would need to partner with hundreds of health care organizations and convince them to a) push copies their data to Microsoft's HealthVault servers, and/or b) expose services by which HealthVault can query patient records, schedule appointments with their own scheduling services, etc., and/or c) use HealthVault for the actual storage of their patient records. None of this is gonna happen. Plus, Microsoft is going to piss off partners and independent health care ISVs the more they push into these vertical markets. |
