Microsoft reveals US Navy secrets | |

A sharp-eyed user of Microsoft's Virtual Earth has found images of classified US Navy technology. The
image
shows an
Ohio-class
ballistic missile submarine being pulled out of the water at the
Trident
Submarine Base in Bangor, Maine and displays its propeller in full view.
Submarine propellers are highly classified and are usually hidden when
submarines go into dry dock. | ||

Oh, please! Don't be stupid. "NAVY Secret"? Secret from who?
It reminds me a cold war. American army pretends what russians don't know anything about USA military bases, Soviet army pretends what americans don't know anything about soviet bases. I same time both sides are using satellites to spy against each other. Who are fools in such situation? Ordinary people ofcoz! It's secret for fools. |

The title of the article is misleading if not sensationalist;
The Navy is or should be aware of the orbits of surveillance satellites. While it could be more difficult to track orbits and timing of other Nations' military satellites the path for commercial ones is not a secret and it should taken in the account when scheduling certain kind of operations. So if the leak was not intentional a check with the America's Cup teams and the way they always kept hidden the fins of the boats could be inspirational. |

| I highly doubt this is a given-away secret. Hell we still have to keep B1-Bs in clear view for the Soviet sats to get pictures of on a routine basis as part of an agreement to make sure we aren't re-retro-fitting them for nuclear arnaments. For all we know the Navy could have ripped off the real prop and put a cardboard one onto it while in drydock, which may look nothing like the real one. :) |

#3 Exactly my thought; this is the beauty of deception: you never know where it starts or end. Btw the propeller looks out of proportion but I am not an expert in Subs. |

#2: The images were not taken by satellite. They were taken from an airplane making aerial pictures, which is how the lower altitude higher resolution images are taken in many places.
That having been said, I am surprised that the plane wasn't warned off by the military folks when it came close to their airspace. |

#6 Are you sure about it? If so things are getting more and more weird.
As you correctly stated military and so called strategic areas are labelled as no fly over zone. #8 As a tax payer I do think it is important although we do not know what happened so... The only sure thing so far is that the title of the article is preposterous. |

#8: It really isn't important. While at one time these propeller designs were classified, they are not considered so much now. Pictures of these designs have been available since the mid 1990's.
Plus, thanks to Toshiba, the Russians (and I'm sure, the Chinese) know the basic design already. |

No, it's ok. Submarine needs to move as faster as possible producing as lower noise as possible. Only huge prop can do this. Several small props can't give enough power and will produce a lot of noise. |

If it was important any more the US would have already taken this down. Its obviously NOT a big deal. You know people in your government read the internet too right? From what I gathered all of our new subs use something like Red October's propulsion system (not big screws like this).
