10 Things You Should Know About Microsoft's Silverlight | |

Crafting a Web strategy is important for any thriving business. However, implementing that strategy with rich Internet applications is not always as easy as it should be. To ease that pain, Microsoft Corp. recently announced Silverlight, a cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for Web application developers. The plug-in, currently available as a Release Candidate (which for all intents and purposes means it's released now), enables rich application development including media, interactivity and animation. The Silverlight plug-in currently works with Internet Explorer and Firefox Web browsers on Windows and with Firefox and Safari on Mac OS X. With the public release of Silverlight imminent, now is the right time to become familiar with the software and how it might affect your Web application strategy. With so much Silverlight information available right now, it is difficult to distill what is important and what is hype. I'll do my best to lift the fog with these 10 things that you should know about Microsoft's Silverlight. | ||

1. Silverlight Avoids Cross-Browser/OS Issues
Geez, way to spin the negative into a positive. The internet is about platform independence, when is Microsoft going to stop trying to commandeer the internet? 2. Silverlight 1.1 Is the Real Story The Microsoft marketing machine is one of the best in the industry. Getting developers excited about stuff is never a bad idea--Microsoft knows this and has mastered it. 3. Silverlight Uses Technologies Your Developers Already Know Every technology is built on some previous work. This is nothing new. 4. Silverlight UI Is just Markup -- Like HTML No way! All the "HTML coders" can become real "Silverlight coders". lol 5. Silverlight and AJAX Technologies Are Complementary Compatible? 6. Silverlight Allows Developers and Designers to Work Together Sorry, this has never been as smooth and easy as presentation and code behind would lead one to believe. 7. Silverlight Deliverables Are Not Atomic Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing. Good software design can really capitalize on this. 8. Silverlight Is New Huh? Guess they were running out of article bullet points. 9. Silverlight XAML versus WPF XAML Undecided on this. Neither is 10. Silverlight Is a Great Way to Learn XAML Probably true. Microsoft does have knack for making technologies accessible to novices, so they can write fragile departmental applications. On the other hand, it's just plain smart to get everyone using your tools. 11. Silverlight is not made by Adobe. |

| I love silverlight, but my first project i wanted to do with it i got screwed.. because they havent enabled live streaming with the media control yet, and i wanted to do an http stream :( |

| #3, I thought my commentary was pretty fair to Microsoft. If anything, I was snubbing the article's author. I was unaware that the measure of support for a product did not allow for any moderation--only whether you are a zealot or not. |

one comment... "Sorry, this has never been as smooth and easy as presentation and code behind would lead one to believe. " true, but its definitely improved over the years. And I think its gonna get that much better as adoption of newer versions of visual studio and the Expression products... ENFORCES some rudimentary life cycle and work cycle enforcement between designers and developers. |
