Today at Comic-Con International 2007, Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360™ HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 ERP (United States only) starting Aug. 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition (HD) entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of “300” from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and “Heroes: Season 1” from Universal Studios. In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba’s highly successful “Perfect Offer” of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179 ERP, consumers can choose five HD DVD titles for free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season. | ||

I don't know if that price reduction will happen in Canada too, but if it does it only makes the drive more compelling. The only thing holding me back is the noise of the Xbox 360 and questions about picture quality. Can anyone comment on how HD-DVD over component (from the Xbox) compares to an upscaled DVD player over HDMI? This post was edited by MrRoper on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 10:29. |

#1, HD DVD on Xbox 360 over the HD cable for the Xbox 360 [Component] is just as good as any of the available Toshiba HD DVD players. It is well worth the buy.
The same rig, using the available VGA cable out to support an HDCP compliant 1080P res, is nothing short of stunning. While we used the available VGA 1080P HDCP support available for Xbox 360 and HD DVD, you have to have pretty good [young] eyes to note any difference in quality and you'd have to be running a very high end display. For any of the great mainstream displays out there and against the HD DVD players, the Xbox 360 and its companion HD DVD player perform very well. Our staff and customers certainly have enjoyed them and so far we have had no failures. This example we did [the antique is the host PC and equipment bay for power, Xbox 360 HD DVD, and sat receivers, is paired with a commercial 65" Plasma display supporting 1080P and HDMI 1.3 [true black] it uses commmercial Component, VGA and HDMI modules as pluggable interfaces, and made for a great HD DVD and HDCP test bed. I'd like to know how many never had any problem (3 red lights) with their console on all those sold.
This is what stoping me... it's like if I buy it, it's pretty sure one day I will have to send it back for repair at least once. |

#3, as best as one might guess - and that is all it would be, is a guess, it would be about 70% of 360 owners who have not had issues <YET!> I say yet, because I only personally know of one person who has had a 360 since launch [his is fine] and the others were bought during or after Feb 2006 [mine are that old]. Of all those we do know [quite a number] and sold to customers, none have failed yet and all are used very heavily for both gaming and as media extenders/content downloaders. Perhaps we have been lucky... I just don't know.
**Some notes: All the 360's we are aware of have been installed and operated horizontally and in locations that have central AC/HVAC systems of one type or another with only two exceptions - one of which was purchased at launch and one in Mar 07. So far, all units have remained in good order and we have neither seen or had reports of other issues like disk scratching. Stuff we think is chump/lame: Opposite an account and games for Windows, one may not simultaneously game on the 360 and the PC using the same Live account. A separate account would be needed - even though a person on the PC in Halo 2 would not be able to play 360 based Halo 2 particpants. One ought to be able to use the same Live account for up to [at least] three simultaneous 360's, PC's and or a mix of the two. |

screw the HD Drive
my biggest problem is that xbox media center extender can't play my over 200 gigs of bit torrent download movies. why do I need a converter? that is just wrong |

ahhhh..... can't play your illegally downloaded movies - sniff.
I have the HD drive and love it - great pic quality and a great price. Plus you can hook it up and use it on your computer too. I have had my Xbox since last november and no red light for me yet but i am not using it 8 hours a day. |

#5 - RedHook - I used VLC (videolan.org) to convert incompatible video files to WMV and then stream them to my 360. Works great.
Best part is, as long as your machine is fast, you can start the convert process and immediately start playing the resulting WMV before it's done converting. As long as it's converting faster than you're playing it, you won't even know. I actually wrote a Powershell script that lets me auto-convert any movie I want, and then deletes it when I'm done watching it. Basically, it's on-the-fly movie conversion. |

The HD-DVD drive for the 360 is excellent on Component, VGA and HDMI - glad to see there is a slight price drop, though it has been selling for that price in most places for sometime...as for the 5 HD-DVD pack - sounds like the same thing Sony has been doing for sometime with Blu-Ray!
While I think it is great to get Heroes exclusively - why is 300 such a big deal? It is out on Blu-ray as well! Hopefully this will help the HD-DVD group to finally pick up some speed in sales, though I'm still buying 5x more Blu-Rays than them even now. #8: I have both a standalone HD-A2 and a BDP-300. The HD-DVD disk promotion (not for the addon, but for standalones) started on 3/1/07, while the BD one started 7/1/07, so it is not HD is copying BD as you imply, rather it is the other way around.
I buy many more HD disks than BD, I have 5 Blu disks now, and about 30 HD disks. For all the going on and on that BD fans do about more studios, more exclusivity, number of PS3s sold, etc. BD disks are outselling HD disks by 3 to 2 (the newer figures, not the old 2-1 from earlier in the year). You would think that with more exclusive studios - Sony, Disney, Fox - that they would outsell Universal by more than 3 to 2. As for Target, they will still sell the 360 add-on in stores, and they will still sell HD players on their web site. They will not sell the Toshiba players in B&M because, as Target themselves put it, Sony bought all the end caps. That means that Sony does not want to give a consumer choice but rather buy all the shelf space. Now imagine if Toshiba with their HD partner Microsoft (GASP!) did the same thing, how many people would be yelling monopoly right now? As for running an addon over component, I had it hooked up to my old Toshiba tube HDTV (through a H-K 7.1 receiver) and a Philips LCD. The picture looked wonderful on both, and the sound quality with the receiver was great (using the speakers of the LCD was not good, but it got the job done). I only switched to a standalone because running through the 360 was a bit inconvienient - nothing wrong with it but it did not fit into my HT setup. I switched to the BDP-300 because the PS3 was sub-standard for movie playback. People say the 360's fan is loud, about 15 minutes into specific movies the PS3 fan would kick on and be much louder than my 360. The PS3 did not work with my harmony, and it just didn't work the way I wanted. So now I have the PS3 on the upstairs LCD and the BDP on my toshiba. As for comparing HD to BD, there is no difference, now (at the beginning BD had bad picture quality). But they are the same for PQ & AQ. But that brings up the question, why spend more for a BD player over an HD player? It is movie choice, and right now BD is not putting out the movies I really want. Sure, POTC 1 & 2, Bond, Big Fish and Closer (last 2 were the GF's picks, not mine) are good to watch, but they do not match my favorites for HD. But your choice of movies may be different than mine. |

i have an xbox360 with Vista Ultimate (MC) and i can play ALL downloaded content from any torrent. i would suggest you look for a solution to your problem.. (search for transcoding on google)
