AOL Merger Doesn't Add Up | |

As AOL Time Warner Inc. stock sank last week to the lowest level since the companies announced plans to merge two years ago, the biggest merger in corporate history looked more and more like the biggest blunder. Together the two companies were worth more than $300 billion when their corporate nuptials were announced in January 2000. Today, AOL Time Warner's market value is $105 billion, and there is every reason to suspect it could fall further after the company announces its first-quarter earnings later this month. | ||

Big business mergers happen because the executives at one of the companies are afraid of becoming irrelevant, and they want to cash in on their golden parachute before it's too late.
HP and Compaq... If they continued on by themselves, one of them would likely be facing bankruptcy in the next 10 years. Or at least that's what they think. Same with AOL and TW... Time-Warner thought they were going to be in trouble if they didn't sell out to AOL. Then they realize too late that AOL was part of the dot-com flash in the pan, and now they regret it. |
