I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said 'we're out of business, we're moving on.'

While he's right he is a loony and in saying that I can't see the "Price Cut" sony have mentioned - anyone? Anyone? Oh right it wasn't one it was just a 20gb size increase for the same price.

Sony is just bitter about the success of mp3 and failure of its proprietary music format.

Perhaps Peter should concern himself with selling PlayStations.

#7: I'm aware of that thanks, but I'm admittedly baffled as to why you would continue to post unrelated stories here when you have dedicated sites for just those kinds of stories, even though myself and others have complained about it. Do you not care what your users think? Do you believe that these XBox stories belong on ActiveWin for some reason? Do you post Windows-specific stories on ActiveXbox?

#8 actually as a long standing member you should know the front page is for Microsoft/Windows news...so in theory we could just post them all here - anything that relates to comments directed towards microsoft will get posted on the frontpage..as will ALL reviews that get posted on the site, just like Windows reviews appear on xbox.
Don't worry you'll soon be able to filter what you want and don't want. Hopefully stop any winging.

Latch, it's obvious why Apple stories are posted here. If you look at ActiveMac, no one comments on any of the posts. As for the XBOX threads - I guess some days are slow news days.
I’m sure Lloyd will straighten this all out…

Main reason is that exactly - until we have a proper filtered option people don't actually know about the other sections most of the time, we split news around when it is likely to be viewed and read and commented on - like this was clearly read by more people than you may think.

The good news is that the Active Network has more traffic than ever and it is very steady/consistent and the user base is active and becoming more so. Give us just a little bit and we'll have what you want - emphasis on "you" and what each user likes and how they like it. Obviously, there has to be a great amount of emphasis on the content creation, management and publishing side of the equation - much of that usability will make it into the public facing side of the environment [a place into which one drops desired parts that share common resources and tools].
On a personal preferences front: I like the reviews as they are so much more personal than others [like the reviewers are talking to one as a real person] and see the relationship between the various Microsoft products? - I mean, who is not using their Xbox as a media extender? Hands? Okay, Latch, but you don't even run Vista, and your point is taken just the same. Viewing Windows as an isolated piece of software is not accurate - it is a platform upon which an ecosystem exists - only part of which includes the Xbox.
The point is, we're working on a lot of very intelligent bits that help people not just see and find what they are interested in, but how these things relate to perhaps things they are less interested in.
Now that said, I'd love and welcome a debate lambasting the Xbox, consoles et al -v gaming and on the PC in particular, and equally, an Xbox like revision that is media centric and plays BD and HD DVD movies - an Xbox for old turds like me that like media, and love gaming/gamers - even though I get slaughtered at anything more complex than Mahjong, well there was the orginal Crimson Skies... - now there I could kick some butt. Any case, I guess context is what it is all about... ideas on how to relate context are most welcome - as we develop this, it would be nice to be able to thread context back into stories in ways that make it easy to relate stories. I think guys like Latch would like that, or at least appreciate the technology behind it.

#13... no one believes you
I just assumed the xbox stories were here this week, simply because E3 (you know the papa of all videogame conferences) was this week. And the sony versus microsoft stores are interesting. Hell, i find the strategy stories as interesting, or more so, than the technology-oriented stories.
Hey Byron, what a complete sham this sony price cut is. I must've read that headline 30 times this week. The truth will only get to 5% of the online audience. Sony... mission accomplished.

99% of the Xbox stories this week for E3 showed up on ActiveXbox.com, as it should be. For those who were not aware, I simply posted a single post each day on the main ActiveWin.com to inform our readers of our extensive news coverage about E3 on ActiveXbox.com.
I could be wrong, but I think this is the only article (besides reviews) about Xbox that was posted on ActiveWin.com this week.
Reviews have been and always will be posted in both sections. Reviews are the sites #1 asset. It's truly original and exclusive content to the site for the AWIN community. We are proud of the reviews (and we hope you all like them), and feel it's necessary to prominently place them in multiple sections to obtain maximum readership. Depending on the product, we spend hours and weeks creating reviews, and we hope that readers will see that.

I am going to add my 2 cents (i had to type out cents because I don't know how to create the cent symbol on a Mac yet...no ALT+0162 anymore) on this article.
First of all...some have a HDD, and some don't. He is complaining about multiple sku's with different hardware features. Let's see. We had the PS3 20gb that didn't have the wifi hardware. We had the PS3 20gb that didn't have the memory card hardware. And then we have the PS3 60gb (more HDD space), that does have the 2 pieces of hardware absent from the PS3 20gb. Then they dump the $499 PS3 20gb in favor of having a single $599 60gb. Then they release a 80gb sku in Thailand. When asked if the US will get a 80gb version, Sony stated "No, there are no plans for an 80gb version for the US. Thailand is a special market because of the video demands and the HDD space needed). Then they tell users they are doing a price drop to $499 for the PS3 60gb, and adding yet another sku PS3 80gb for $599 (first they said there will be no 80gb, and now they are?!). Now we are back to $499 and $599. There has not been a price drop. People have never been able to get into a PS3 for less than $500. But wait. Now there is news that they are just running the 60gb PS3 out of stock, to eventually have only 80gb versions at $599. So now we are BACK to a single $599 console. But wait yet again, now they are stating that they plan on having both for sometime because there is sufficient stock to meet the $499 and $599 demand for a long time.
But now there is video evidence from Kaz from Sony stating that they truly are running out existing inventory to have a single $599 80gb Sku.
You tell me Sony....do you have that tail up your butt?
His talk about HD-DVD is a joke. I hope he is aware that stand alone HD-DVD players are outselling stand alone BR players. I hope he also knows that HD-DVD is outselling BR in Europe as well. If it wasn't for Sony giving away their BR player in the PS3, BR would be toast right now. I suppose if they want to give away BR players to be in the lead "on paper", more power to them....just less money to them. At least HD-DVD can stand on it's own, and make a profit, and outsell BR.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/sony-says-60gb-is-not-over-in-us/
"Update 4: We got this clarified statement from Karraker, who said "The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 **until supplies of that unit are depleted**. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."

So basically they are dropping the price on the 60GB unit to get rid of stock that they cannot move. When is a price drop not a price drop? When you won't be able to buy something in 2 month for the price advertised. This is a sale to move old stock not a price drop. The amount of BS that flows from Sony is rivaled only by Steve Jobs I think.
