Microsoft Kills Windows and Office Validation Assistant Anti-Piracy Efforts | |

Microsoft's anti-piracy efforts will undertake a major overhauling. The Redmond company plans to take down both the Windows Validation Assistant and the Office Validation Assistant. However, Microsoft is going to fill in the empty spaces left by the discontinuing of WVA and OVA with Windows Comparison Guide (WCG) and the Office Comparison Guide (OCG). Additionally there is also the Windows Genuine Advantage and Office Genuine Advantage that will survive the anti-piracy cancelled services. Still, this is not the end of the upgrades in store for the Microsoft anti-piracy programs. Feature updates and additions are also planned to be introduced. | ||

WGA really needs to go. It's is the most consumer intrusive piece of SHIT (yes, I said SHIT) that MS has ever foisted upon it's customers.
Just today, I had another 'event' with WGA. I was prepping a ThinkPad T42 to use as the base for a Guitar Workstation, and ran windows update. It had been a while, so there were like 30 updates. After 2 or 3 "we need to update this software" crap (including wga, twice I think) and a restart, I started over and it finally started downloading the updates. I walked away, and went back an hour later. It was on item # TWO of 30-something, with a friggin' WGA next box for yet another WGA update to install. GD' it I'm so fed up with this SHIT! The only funny part was the checkmark for "Show me the benefits of Windows Genuine Advantage" at the bottom of the last screen. Benefits my ass. TL |

#1, There was an additional WGA update last week - no press about it, nothing... I had a few calls about it - customers sharing their frustrations over WGA and the basic question, "how many *********** ******** ******** times do we have to install this thing?!?!?"
I had no good answer, and I wonder how many other partners out here are dealing with the same issues. I offered that it is possible that new WGA validation controls become necessary as pirates defeat previously installed versions - but it is just a guess. I agree, WGA has to go - it does not seem to be helping anyone and it's only harming legit customers - that's the appearance, in any case. Now the reality may be that MS is recovering a lot of lost revenue - I just don't know, and that is part of the problem with WGA. |
