Nintendo's Wii video game console outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 six to one in June in Japan, a Japanese publishing company said Monday. Nintendo, the maker of "Pokemon" and "Super Mario" games, sold 270,974 Wii consoles in Japan in June, while Sony sold 41,628 PS3 machines, and Microsoft sold 17,616 Xbox 360 consoles, it said. The PS3 has been a big flop in the US, and it's getting crushed by the Xbox 360 not only in the U.S. but in Europe and Australia in Xbox 360 software sales, and comparable launch numbers. The PS3 is essentially the new Dreamcast. This post was edited by AWBrian on Monday, July 02, 2007 at 14:59. |

Speaking of Dreamcast, who doesn't feel that Sony deserves this failure? Their arrogance and hype machine have finally cost them. It was hype and hype alone that killed the DC. Rather than competing with a superior system and games, they used lies and exaggeration of capabilities to choke the DC out of the marketplace. | Funny but the other two units are half the price of the PS3. Personally I like the PS3 and will probably buy one soon. Everyone must realize that a Blue Ray player is still over $600 so you get a Blue Ray player and game machine for the price of a stand alone unit. Not to bad really if you look at the features of the PS3 compare to the Wii and the 360. |

PS3 is a great console - but the Wii will outsell them both in the end. I'm lucky enough to have them all and I rate them differently in all aspects
1: Xbox 360 - great games device, excellent online and great for media center - poorly designed inside. Masses of games, 1080p for gaming on it is just upscaled most of the time. 2: Nintendo Wii - perfect size for the living room, gameplay back over graphics, cool online features that are getting better, innovative 3: Best design internally of all three, feels expensive and well built compared to the 360, massive lack of games, online service getting better and better - home is superb and has some great Arcade titles out at last. Real high definition out of the box thanks to Blu-Ray which despite the naysayers is excellent and deserves its lead...just wish PC blu-ray players would drop in price. Out of all three I rate the 360 best, it has been a shame it has been so unreliable for a lot of people including myself...Still love the Wii though. #4 - but you mention arrogance you should surely count Microsoft in that in almost every way. I personally don't judge consoles in that way, I buy which ever one I think suits me, for the first time I actually have all three and make use of them all (360 more than any) I don't want any of the them to fail as without Sony, Microsoft would have no competition in the market bar Nintendo who are aiming for a different market (who MS will copy and go for at the end of the year)
Yes Sony have been arrogant like Sega were before them, in my mind back then the Dreamcast should have won the day as it was an excellent console, sadly it didn't and they died, I don't want that to happen to Sony as I really do think the PS3 will show just what a great machine it is within the year and home really really is excellent (I'm on the beta) the only real let down on their side has been their online service, but for me when its free I can't argue too much. If they had charged for it then that would be a different story all together. Also not sure where anyone said PS3 is failing in Europe - it is the one place it is actually selling well, console wise not game wise...same with Australia - its now outselling Wii and Xbox there too. Anyway back to my point - competition in this sector is good, I'd even call it vital as it really pushes consoles forward. Those throwing the word "arrogance" around...
I think you all are confusing it with LEADERSHIP. It just so happens, that sony is LEADING down a patch and no one is following. Whereas Microsoft led people online (and people went), into xboxlivearcade retro gaming (and people went), etc. and for its part, nintendo is LEADING people toward new gameplay mechanics (and people are following). |

People very often confuse the meaning of the word, "arrogant" and its derivatives.
Essentially, it is a belief which does not benefit from a pragmatic base and it is the opposite of pragmatism, which does - that which constitutes proof. Mooresa56 is quite right, and I think we have to get away from the use of the word arrogance in the way it has become popularized - it is unfortunate. Clearly, competition is good for the most part - it can be too intense - as when too many compete for the same thing [Africa during a long period of drought comes to mind and the same is true of markets]. Market leadership is essential - and people forget that, using arrogance and monoply interchangably as suites arguments against leadership in markets - which as morresa states coorectly, is the art of influencing others to accomplish something [usually something worthwhile]. Right now, competition in gaming may be too intense - perhaps unintentionally taking out PC gaming in the process - a goal of Sony and Nintendo and a situation that Microsoft had better wake up right now and realize has the potential to kill the PC in many important ways. I say, to heck with the consoles - all of them. Get back on the PC and real quick - focus on making Games for Windows as easy to use, run and play as they are on a console, or risk losing the entire platform and that which has driven PC innovation for decades. |

ARROGANCE is the correct word
"Even if we didnt ship with any games people would still buy the ps3" thats a pretty exact quote from an early exec conference from the sony camp a little over a year ago THATS ARROGANCE Arrogance is also, Katuragi saying that their First party games were so strong they didn't need third party exclusives anymore Sonys arrogance and im happy to see them get their butts bitten... Long live Wii360! |

cchance, the very LAST thing I want to do is take up for Sony. But I still say its not arrogance. Its simply a series of incorrect business assumptions on their part. Maybe you and I can agree that sony was simply "too proud" to ante up to secure exclusives, etc... but I don't think they're arrogant.

Is it unforgiveable for the market leader (sony) to misunderstand to such an extreme? Yes. But of course, companies begin to act 'different' when they meet solid competition (Microsoft, in this example). Those of us who have followed msft for a long while, recognize this as the classic 'competitor trips on their own two feet, because they are busy looking over their shoulder' at microsoft. And more along the lines of a symantic review... its worth noting that rarely does someone mis-characterize 'leadership' as 'arrogance' when its WORKING. When the market agrees with the market leader... we call it "leadership". When the market disagrees (as it is beginning to appear in the console market) that we confuse it with 'arrogance'. |
