Will Longhorn be a real bull when it comes to security? Computer Reseller News reports that Longhorn, the next generation version of Windows server, will be packing federated services, new collaboration capabilities, advanced storage features based on Yukon technology, and a policy-driven directory. Longhorn server should be ready to go in Q4 of next year. Windows.NET server, due in a few months, will pack native XML support, Passport support, application security and eight-node clustering, according to CRN. | ||

Wow, Q4 of next year? I kind of don't see that happening. I bet the Longhorn client version will be released by the end of next year, since the holidays will help move the boxes out of the stores. It just seams a bit too soon to release the Longhorn server because that will be just over a year since the .NET servers shipped, and since there is no advantage to servers shipping for the holiday season. Should be interesting to watch, though.

| #2, good points, but MS has never been great at accomplishing deadlines for their bigger products, and since Longhorn does appear to be a huge update, I can't see them finishing .NET servers, then just a year later RTM Longhorn. Maybe, but I'm not counting on it. |
