Microsoft unveils new Surface computer | |

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. has taken the wraps off "Surface," a coffee-table shaped computer that responds to touch and to special bar codes attached to everyday objects. Surface is essentially a Windows Vista PC tucked inside a shiny black table base, topped with a 30-inch touchscreen in a clear acrylic frame. Five cameras that can sense nearby objects are mounted beneath the screen. Users can interact with the machine by touching or dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushes across the screen, or by setting real-world items tagged with special bar-code labels on top of it. <%=GetPoll(106)%> | ||

| Certainly looks great and must like the philips prototype last year...can't wait to get up close to one and see how it works. Love the idea of the UI although I can't see it being something I'd buy for my house simply because it would only be a show off item. |

#1 and #3, I think that one of main points of this solution is to provide such a system in places where you don't often have walls to facilitate vertical solutions. This is meant to go in the middle of a room, very possibly winding up in the middle of your living room. Clearly, a horizontal solution is the only one that makes sense. Also, a good deal of this solution's unduplicatable usefulness is in being able to set objects on it and have the computer interact with them. You can't do that with a vertical solution.
I can think of some fun things for this if it ever does wind up in our living rooms. One could be that it replaces your Media Center PC. Instead of using an old handheld remote, you could use the rich graphical interface and touchscreen in your coffee table. Also, while a movie or TV program is showing on your TV monitor, the surface display could be showing you detailed information about what you're watching... or the TV program listings... or you could use it to just surf the web or whatever without minimizing what you're watching. |

| Not necessarily. The question is fairly open -- would they buy it, not when or under what circumstances. :-) With the exception of some that may see a business case for them now, I think most are thinking 3-5 years in the future or they're thinking, "sure, if I had the money". |

For those of you who couldn't envisage a commercial use one has already been proposed, restaurant trades. Each dish could be tagged, is read when placed onto the table and at the end of the meal individual patrons could share the costs by dragging the icons representing what they ate to their tab. Ordering could also be done on-screen, and the system could track whether a dish has arrived yet, even indicating the expected wait. The system would also be able to track that the correct dish is delivered to each of the tables. Stock tracking for the Hospitality industry.
Admittedly the current cost is prohibitive but as with any new thing it won't stay that way forever. |
