Rival open-source efforts to simplify development of Java software are inching closer together to battle a common enemy: Microsoft. Two open-source development-tool projects--Eclipse, backed by IBM, and NetBeans, initiated by Java inventor Sun Microsystems--seek to make building Java software simpler by defining a common structure to link development tools. Each aims to create a software framework, called an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), to connect code editors, analyzers and debuggers from multiple companies so that tools will be easier to learn and use. | ||

I didn't know Eclipse was IBM. I guess it makes sense. It's pretty cool. Much better than NetBeans/Forte.
Unfortunately, I hate IDEs that don't let me just open one file. IDEs that force you to create a project and add files force you to use one build methodology and restrict your freedom =( I like to use Ant to build my Java projects, and with IDEs like Forte and Eclipse, you can't do that easily. Oh well. Outside of Visual Studio.NET, Eclipse is one of the better IDEs out there. |

#2: Also try jEdit.
It's Swing based and it's slow to start, but once it's started it's speedy. It's a great UI and has all the power of Emacs with a Windows-style GUI and logical default key shortcuts. It has a Bean-scripting language macro language that's great for writing macros in the Java language! It runs great on my Pentium 233MMX (slow to start, but quick after that). Its the only editor I use for large projects in languages other than .NET (Java, Python, Perl, VBScript, etc). http://www.jedit.org |
