Critical Features Cut from Windows Server Virtualization | |

Facing what he called "universal truths about product development," Microsoft general manager for virtualization strategy Mike Neil concluded a multi-page blog post this afternoon touting the progress made with Windows Server Virtualization, code-named "Viridian," by announcing the removal of three of the service's most highly anticipated features: live migration of running virtual machines between servers; "hot-adds" of virtual components such as storage, processors, and memory; and support for more than 16 logical processing cores. "With all this progress comes the occasional tradeoff," Neil wrote this afternoon. "Earlier this week we had to come to grips with some universal truths about product development: *) Shipping is a feature, too; *) The quality bar, the time you have, and the feature set are directly correlated." | ||

If anyone was waiting for WSV to come on stream instead of either going with VMware or upgrading to ESX 3.01, the above news makes it a no brainer. One of the terrific aspects of VMware's ESX, available right now, is the live migration of running virtual machines between servers. With Microsoft not able to match this key capability makes their product an also ran before it is even available for sale.
By the failure of the WSV team to deliver on the above three capabilities, they have given enterprise virtualization over to EMC and VMware. This is a mistake on the part of Microsoft of the first order. Virtualization is THE buzz in the enterprise. There isn't a medium to large size corporation that isn't already doing it or has plans to do it. It is multi-billion dollar market. The chief reason for this is that hardware is many times more powerful than in the past. When you spend 10-15k per server and up, you want to utilize the heck out of it. You want it running full tilt 24/7. So, companies are stacking applications, particularly those running as a service(s), on a single server. However, to patch the BIOS, firmware, drivers, security patches, application enhancements, and DR, one needs a second server that can be easily switched to while the other is being worked on (and this is just one of many scenarios). Virtualization and particularly live migration makes this all possible. It is shocking that Microsoft would give this area of enterprise computing up so easily. Look for them to buy EMC. |
