I have posted my review of the Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000. Here is an excerpt: The design is really odd at first. The mouse is designed so you do not have to turn your hand and wrist, and just keep in your natural position. I think this design is one to get used to, like the natural keyboard designs. When I used the mouse it felt like my hand was too high up and felt like I was holding something in my hand rather than naturally using the mouse. I can see, though, how this mouse can help you in the long run because you aren't turning your wrist. But - this mouse will definitely take some getting used to. Clicking the two left side buttons was very awkward and almost impossible using my thumb and finger. I have medium sized hands and my hand rested on the mouse fine, but I could see if you had smaller hands you might feel awkward. | ||

Hold your arm out straight in front of you. Your hand naturally turns to the right, with the thumb and index finger being visible to you - with the remaining index fingers being largely hidden by the first index finger. This mouse is designed to help one maintain that position
and still access the buttons easily. That's how it is supposed to work - but I don't buy it, or like it and similarly designed mice do not feel right to me. Here's why. Set that same hand down on a flat surface - like a desk. Note how the hand wants to fall to the left and more flat. Now, observe how you use a more traditional mouse - you use your wrist and not your arm to move it left to right, etc... - in a shallow arc. pen your hand and look at it - pretty amazing - note the two large pads at the base of the palm - one under the thumb and another, smaller one under the last two digits. They are perfectly designed to cushion the hand and work like a set of hydraulic buffers to allow precise control of the smallest movements of the wrist - as when you mouse around in the arc I mentioned above – they insulate objects in the hand from motions that are too abrupt – kind of like a good driver who eases into breaking – easing off pressure as the vehicle slows [as opposed to the folks who just jam them on at the lest second]. Now try that with your hand positioned more on its edge as this mouse would force - it feels weird to me - as if the right hand side of my right hand - specifically, the last two digits, are falling off the edge of the mouse. When you build a lot of systems, you test about every mouse that is out there and you have to pick mice that will work for the widest range of people - lefties, too. Now, young guys... that "pimp" drive their PC's - e.g., they lean waaayyyy the heck back in their chairs as if they are driving low and sloooowww... - now these guys would like this mouse, because their arms would be extended as I described in para one above. |

#1, Extend you arm and hand forward and see how it feels most natural with the plane of the slightly cupped palm to be at a 45 degree angle. This mouse encourages that position.
#2, It may not seem right to some, but the hand, wrist and arm position this mouse reinforces is more natural and better for you. I found that letting my hand fall more naturally onto a mouse results in the greatest comfort. My hand actually rests on the mouse on the right side going down to and touching the mouse pad. This position gives the various tunnels in your wrist the least pressure. You'll also notice that the position of other ergonomic controls in the world tend to reinforce a similar orientation and not the flat hand to flat horizontal surface orientation. (I do use normal keyboards, however. Only Unicomp at http://www.pckeyboard.com/ makes the quality IBM-style mechanical keyboards these days and they provide enough key travel and resistance to be comfortable to me. So, all my PCs have either an IBM or Unicomp keyboard attached.) |

Thanks for both replies. Somehow, I've personally never really acknowledged any personal preferences in keyboards and mice. I've always simply used the ones provided me. But given that I, like most of you, sit and compute 9 hours/day... perhaps I'm overdue to get a bit more PICKY with my peripherals.

| #4, Letting people pick things out like what keyboards and mice they use, and what kind of chair they use is one way to make people happier at work. We replace things like this often and allowing the people who work with us to pick out what they want lets them use what they like. It costs a little more, but not nearly as much as endless cycles of finding, and retraining new people. So doing things to keep people actually turns out to be very cost effective. Like I said, the younger guys dig these kinds of mice. The older guys - 50 to 70+ seem to like as light and traditional a mouse as possible and no matter how good the wireless, they don't like them and prefer wired mice. |
