Donated PCs can create problems for givers and receivers, because of Windows licensing rules. A replacement Windows license can cost more than the donation is worth. One library's response: Linux. The Calef Library in Washington, Vermont, received three donated computers with "no legitimate operating system," says librarian Jessamyn West in a YouTube video. She installed Ubuntu on a couple of the PCs yesterday, in about an hour. | ||

| I've got Ubuntu 7.04 on one of my older laptops. Works just fine. I use Firefox to browse the web. I read my email in Gmail, read my feeds in Google Reader, check my Google Calendar regularly, heck, I even create and document and spreadsheet every now and then in Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Cost of installed software: $0.00 |

Indeed, this is one of the times that OSS in general works great: for re-use of what would be older and normally junked systems.
But, like I've moaned before, I only wish ATI + 3D + X wasn't broken.... really is a bummer, and I don't want to fork out some $$$ for an nVidia card just to get it to work. That's the only reason I haven't switched yet....well, that and the fact that Ubuntu couldn't grasp the concept that my rig will do 1152x864@75Hz. Modeline entries didn't help, custom VertRefresh wasn't helpful either. It must be something about my monitor that Linux just doesn't like. Very odd. Other than that, Ubuntu 7.04 is actually pretty snazzy--they even fixed the issues in their graphical installer that I encountered earlier (with 6.06 and 6.10.) |

Ubuntu is good, and a monumental advancement for the Linux space. Unfortunately, it's still not quite there yet.
I bought two HD's and one of those quick-change HD rack thingees so I could install Vista and Ubuntu and easy shutdown-swap-boot into the other. Ubuntu is easily the best Linux I've ever used. Instead of complaining about this driver not working or this app crashing, I'm now complaining about nit-picky stuff. This demonstrates that they've fixed a lot of the core issues. Now they need to start focusing on basic usability. Ubuntu is a major step in this regard, but some of the creature comforts like the Mouse4 and Mouse5 buttons on my mouse (the left-side thumb buttons), various keyboard shortcuts like (Win+R for Start/Run, Win+M for minimize-all-to-desktop), etc don't work. I'm sure there's a place to configure some or all of these things, but the Unbuntu folks need to really focus on making the experience seamless for Windows users if they ever hope for more adoption. I *want* to believe! |

This story is amazing for what it leaves out. For about a decade now, Microsoft has insisted that the major computer hardware vendors place a Microsoft license sticker on the computer box. Yeah, look over on the side of the computer that you are using to read this blog. See it? Yeah, now install the Microsoft operating system that matches the license sticker that is fixed to the computer. Problem solved.
