Windows Vista didn’t turn out particularly well and even though it is strengthening, and Microsoft’s numbers have reflected this strength, it is slated for replacement in 2009/10 according to Microsoft. Leopard, which has been delayed until late this year largely to get it up to adequate quality for a true Windows replacement product, will be at its strongest when this new version of Windows comes out. And Linux, now with Dell’s support, is gaining momentum and, with Oracle now in the mix, is likely to go through some consolidation (in terms of the number of distributions above noise level) by this time. It will be a much stronger competitor as well. Let’s take a look at this future battle. I won’t be calling winners and losers, but will be pointing out the key things to look for to call this fight early. | ||

"Windows Vista didn’t turn out particularly well"...cannot conclude that so early. They're writing off the OS for bugs and performance, something which MS can still improve in a service pack.
Feature wise I feel both Mac OS X (including Leopard) and Vista are equal, with both having some unique features. Vista undoubtedly provides the best features for businesses, IT pros and gamers. For home users, the Mac OS may be stronger in terms of the apps bundled with the OS. On the Windows side, third-party apps make up for the lame apps included with the OS. I am beginning to feel the whole industry and consumers is excessively belittleling Vista. #1 -- Agreed. There is so much new in Vista; we are just waiting for apps to be written that take advantage of the new APIs. The new Yahoo Messenger written in WPF is a great example of such an app.
Regarding the built-in apps (photo gallery, dvd maker, etc) -- they are kind of lame. But if MS were to make them any better, they'd be sued immediately for illegal bundling :-( |

The thing I noted in this article was that no matter how the market goes, the author can claim his analysis was correct. I saw no firm stand that did not also provide a way out - and people pay for such analysis?
If you want to know how well Vista will do, for example, look at their qtrly earnings statements and forecasts [Guidance, as they call it for investors]. Microsoft earnings reports are a matter of public record and so is their guidance. Microsoft had a very strong 3rd quarter and offered guidance for a solid fourth quarter - above 13 billion. Microsoft's financial reporing has alwasy been conservative and they have consistently offered very accurate guidance. |

IBM's "Thin client" approach will reduce Total Cost of Ownership?
That's a good one! Sure, a business can save money on software and hardware but factor in the support contracts and the TCO goes through the roof. |
