Microsoft Responds to Reported OEM BIOS Hacks
Time: 01:46 EST/06:46 GMT | News Source: WinBeta | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

The WGA team have finally provided a written response to the reported OEM BIOS Hacks regarding Vista:

I know many of you are aware of reports of hacks that attempt to exploit our OEM BIOS based activation. We're aware of this type of hack and I wanted to take a minute to describe how these work and how we plan to respond.

Not a good week for Microsoft.

#3 Or OpenOffice

"rPath has released security updates to address multiple vulnerabilities identified in OpenOffice.org. These issues could be exploited by attackers to execute arbitrary commands."

http://www.frsirt.com/english/advisories/2007/1305

Despite what the haters say, security is not just a Microsoft problem.

#3: At least you're consistent. Every time we point out a major Windows bug running loose in the wild, you try to deflect by bringing up a FOSS bug that has already been fixed. Oh by the way, how come you aren't refuting what I posted? Didn't you just criticize someone the other day for doing that? And how's ch's challenge going?

#4 By 37047 (216.191.227.68) at 4/11/2007 12:38:54 PM
#2: Hehehe.

#3: Typical response.

Score so far in this thread: Latch -> +4, Parkkker -> 0. Parkkker would be at +1, but the bug he pointed out is fixed in the latest OpenOffice version and is available, where as the defects Latch pointed out are still active.

#4: When you delude yourself into thinking that you are always right, you have no need to refute what others have to say. Isn't that right, Parkkker? Don't forget that Parkkker is paid by Microsoft to divert peoples attention away from Microsoft bugs and other issues, and point them toward F/OSS bugs instead. He is simply another cog in the Microsoft FUD campaign. And a fairly transparent one at that.

#5 By 15406 (216.191.227.68) at 4/11/2007 1:00:14 PM
#5: I've read that MS hires smart people, so your theory doesn't pass muster on initial inspection. Parkker is more like the small dog in the Looney Tunes cartoon that always hangs around the big bulldog and kisses its ass. That also explains why he's a Bushie. He attaches himself to powerful things and thinks that somehow raises his standing. Meanwhile, the rest of us just think he's a toadie.

#6 By 37047 (216.191.227.68) at 4/11/2007 1:14:15 PM
#6: That is a bit of a logical error. Yes, Microsoft has hired some very smart people. However, that does not logically mean that EVERY SINGLE PERSON that Microsoft hires is a genius. And I never said he was in R&D at Microsoft. Microsoft also hires marketing firms, PR firms, etc., and has no direct control over the hiring practices of those companies. I merely said he was a cog in the machine, not that he was working directly inside Microsoft as a salaried employee. He may or may not be. He could be an outside contractor or an employee of an outside contractor. Therefore, his pay would be from Microsoft, even if the check happens to say something different on the top of it. Therefore, I stand by my original statement.

#7 By 15406 (216.191.227.68) at 4/11/2007 1:17:07 PM
#7: Perhaps. I could see him as the poster boy for F@nb0i Inc.

#8 By 32132 (142.32.208.234) at 4/11/2007 1:25:34 PM
#4 "Every time we point out a major Windows bug running loose in the wild, you try to deflect ..."

No. I try and keep things in perspective. Haters like you try to portray Microsoft software as the only software with security issues.

I try to point out that Microsoft major competitors also have security issues.

For example, SQL 2005 has an exemplary security record. Oracle is about to release patches for 37 security issues - 13 of them for the database: http://www.computerpartner.nl/article.php?news=int&id=4980

#9 By 32132 (142.32.208.234) at 4/11/2007 1:29:00 PM
The Hater definition of Microsoft FUD: Pointing out that other software has as many if not more security issues than Microsoft and/or pointing out the tremendous progress Microsoft has made in improving security.

The Canadian defense against accusations of bigotry: Only Toronto hates americans, everyone else in Canada hates Torontonians. No bigots in Canada.

The Microsoft Shill defense against everyone who disagrees with him: Quote others out of context, as though it is fact. Make sure that the issue is deflected when the facts cannot be argued sensibly. Point the finger anywhere but towards Microsoft, because that is what the shill is paid to do.

#11 By 32132 (142.32.208.234) at 4/11/2007 2:24:39 PM
#11 Why are you and Latch soooooo defensive if I point out the flaws in other software in attempt to bring balance to a discussion about security?

Out of Context? Nope! Right on the money!

"everyone [other than Toronto] else is bad because they are different from them [Toronto]"

"Many places in Canada hold the same contempt for Torontonians, because of their "center of the known universe" attitude. "

#12: A better question would be, why are you so defensive when we bring up MS flaws? This site is ActiveWin, not ActiveLinux, ActiveFirefox, ActiveApple or ActiveOracle and that's why we discuss Microsoft and Windows. As far as I know, you're the only one who rushes to point to other vendor's flaws. You and you alone.

#13 By 32132 (142.32.208.234) at 4/11/2007 4:08:24 PM
#13 ActiveWin implies Windows and software that runs on Windows. Otherwise, why did you bring up an Office flaw in #1?

Firefox and Oracle run on Windows. As does iTunes and Quicktime. And OpenOffice. Microsoft Office runs on the Apple OS.

Linux is 360 different operating systems that Microsoft haters use an example of how to write secure software ... so it is important to counteract those lies when the reality is much, much different.

#12 Any software available on the market has discovered and undiscovered bugs; I think that we all agree about that.
If I buy a BMW I am concerned if there is a problem with BMW not Mercedes.
If I install a XXX alarm system in my house and a burglar defeate it and steals my computers I cannot care less that the same happened to my neighbor who installed a YYY alarm system.
If I have a problem the fact that you have a problem too does not bring me any relief.

#15 You never comparison shop? If product A has more features and better security than product B, you don't want to know? You plan to buy randomly?

#16 By 1896 (207.244.167.57) at 4/12/2007 5:42:47 AM
#16 Good try but it does not apply here. The first post was a general comment about a specific situation and without any reference or attempt to compare two different, specific items. Ergo the reply was out of context.

#17 By 15406 (216.191.227.68) at 4/12/2007 8:21:22 AM
#17: Give it up. When it comes to Parkkker, logic does not apply here.

#18 By 37047 (216.191.227.68) at 4/12/2007 8:54:57 AM
#17,#15: If Parkkker was to be told that there was a problem with his car's ignition system, he'd spend hours finding another car model with a similar problem, and be sure to tell you over and over again how other cars have problems with their ignition systems too. That is apparently a better solution to him than addressing the ignition system problem in his own car.

#19 By 32132 (142.32.208.234) at 4/12/2007 10:54:44 AM
#17 I agree that Latch's post was completely off topic. But since he made it, I reserve the right to put it in context. You may prefer only one-sided discussions. I don't.

#19 "If Parkkker was to be told that there was a problem with his car's ignition system ... "

I'd get it fixed.

I wouldn't sell the car and buy the fashionable "Linux" model that has more problems than mine. And when my car was ready to junk or trade-in, I'd comparison shop.

Some overly emotional people would sell their car. But thats not a way to run a business.
