Toshiba slashes price of HD-DVD players | |

Toshiba has slashed the price of its HD-DVD players in the US, effective immediately, in a move it labelled a "strategic reduction." The manufacturer is dropping prices of its entire HD-DVD line of players, with the entry level HD-A2 reduced to USD 399 (EUR 299 / GBP 203) and the newly released HD-A20 model coming to market at USD 499 (EUR 374 / GBP 254). The HD-DVD format features in Microsoft's Xbox 360 console while Sony's rival Blu-ray format is a key element of the PlayStation 3. | ||

| When the price goes down to 100.00 USD, then I might buy one. But 400.00 for a disc player is way out of my price range. |

| #1, I am sure the prices will continue to fall - in time. That said, the Toshiba HD-A1's and A2's have a very capable scaler in them. They up-convert standard DVD's so well that a big part of their value is found in giving new life to existing DVD libraries. They are so capable in this regard, that an HD-DVD title has to be pretty special for us to consider it over standard DVD versions of the same. While the A1's are slower than pond-water to boot initially, the output is easily worth the wait. When compared to dedicated scalers that start at about 1200 dollars [USD], the Toshiba HD DVD players don't seem to be nearly as costly. |

I'm not buying until there is ONE format, and I can get the discs for the same $16 or so I pay now.
