Microsoft Unveils Xbox 360 Elite | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced the upcoming availability of Xbox 360™ Elite, a new model of the video game and entertainment system that includes a 120GB hard drive, a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port, a high-definition cable, and a premium black finish for the console, wireless controller, and Xbox Live® headset. Xbox 360 Elite has enough space for a library of Xbox Live Arcade games and thousands of songs, as well as downloadable high-definition TV shows and movies available on Xbox Live Marketplace. The new 120GB hard drive also will be sold as a stand-alone accessory to give current Xbox 360 owners greater choice and flexibility in their games and entertainment experience. Additional Xbox 360 Elite accessories, such as the black Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit, and the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack, will be available separately. The Xbox 360 Elite and its accessories are expected to begin arriving in U.S. stores on April 29.

Well, this would have been perfect if it would have been placed at the existing $399 price point, and the current two boxes knocked down $100 each.
Components have become much cheaper than they were a year a go. $180 for the 120GB drive update? You can get 120GB drives for around $40 these days. 300GB drives are under $100 now! TL |

on some level I feel betrayed by this. They came out and said that this was only "rumour and not true"
I spent a ton of money on my xbox premium and now I am a dinosaur. |

I am confused - did your Xbox stop working because they made and announcement about a new Xbox version? Does it no longer play games? Feel betrayed - come on. Do you feel betrayed when they bring out a new model year car? It doesn't mean that the old car is not useful anymore and you got a lot of use out of it since you purchased it. There is always going to be something bigger and better. If you waited you wouldn't have gotten to use it and you would be constantly waiting. |

The people who feel betrayed are those who weren't aware of this model when they purchased the XBox 360 Premium and were told that this was the best package available. The Elite has some advantages that cannot be offered with after-market accessories such as running cooler, more silent, HDMI output (some TVs don't do 1080p over Component, HDMI is also capable of transmitting complex audio output that cannot be done over optical or analog such as 7.1 PCM & TrueHD, as well as videophiles who don't want color depth to be compromised by distortion over an analog connection such as VGA and Component).
Then again, they should have included wireless to make it a better bargain, I'd feel ripped off if I had to pay that much extra for what should be enabled in the Premium version (cooler, quieter, HDMI) and only 120GB of space... you can buy that for $40 nowadays but the package costs over $80 more. If there's a shrink in die size then MS are actually saving money with the free bonus of running cool+quiet, so that's not costing them. HDMI should be trivial to add, both technically and cost-wise. You can't even buy 20GB drives today, 120GB should be the default in the Premium as it is. What makes it seem like more of a rip-off is that Sony lets you add in your own 3rd-party drive at however cheap you can buy it. Maybe the choice to make the drive a 2.5" model is hindering Microsoft, but it can't really amount to an extra $80 for another 100GB on top of the Premium model. Honestly I can see why people are ticked off. |
